NASB Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and pleading with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.
NLT Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done.
VOICE Don’t be anxious about things; instead, pray. Pray about everything. He longs to hear your request, so talk to God about your needs and be thankful for what has come.
In biblical contexts, anxiety is something that Paul invites us to bring to God in prayer. For the Philippian church, they are living a Roman colony with potential persecution and economic instability – so these words from Paul would have felt challenging yet comforting. We are to bring everything to God because God is creator of it all. Paul says to bring everything in two ways: prayer and petition. Prayer is our fundamental way to communication with God. Petition (or supplication) is making a specific request to God. Paul lists them out separately to show that we need to communication with God and earnestly seek His intervention in all things. We are also to bring thanksgiving, which an attitude of gratitude and trust in God’s faithfulness and goodness. By adding gratitude to our conversation, it shifts our focus from the problem to God’s provision and past faithfulness – reminding that we can remember God’s faithfulness in the past, trust God in the present, and hope for God’s future care. When we bring all this through our requests, we know God hears us. Those that have a personal relationship with God can bring all their desires and needs to Him and he will hear. There’s no perfect script for prayer, but Paul shows us a pattern: prayer, petition, and thanksgiving. We can come boldly and confidently before God and share everything that is in our heart.
REFLECTION CHECKPOINT: When you hear “don’t be anxious” or “don’t worry” from someone, what feeling does that bring up inside of you?
Let’s talk a little more about the duality of anxiousness and gratitude. We’re bringing our anxious minds to communicate with God, but we are also to bring an attitude of gratitude in this same conversation. The conflicting mindsets can feel like a never-ending war in our minds, but when we learn how the two of them operate – we can start to work on a unified front.
The Greek word that Paul uses for anxious and worry is merimnaó (mer-im-NAH-o). Paul parallel’s Jesus’ teaching in Matthew 6:25-35. He states that prayer is the replacement for anxiety, that thanksgiving affirms confidence in God’s provision, and that the result of these things is God’s peace protecting our heart and mind.
The Greek word that Paul uses for thanksgiving and thanks is eucharistia (yoo-khar-is-tee’-ah). This is deeper than a polite acknowledgement. It’s a covenantal response to our relationship with God. It is both an attitude and an act of worship. Paul shows that thanksgiving is inseparable from prayer and petition. Why? Because it protects our hearts through God’s peace. It takes us back to a place of trust and contentment.
One common thing showed up in the breakdowns of these words: God’s peace protecting our hearts and minds. By utilizing gratitude in our anxious moments, it keeps us focused on God’s provision and goodness. It helps us to remember what He has done for us in the past. It remembers what we’ve overcome to get to where we are. Without it, we could slip back into those old mindsets and habits, focusing on fear and panic instead of peace and confidence. We can slip back into old habits easily when our minds are worn down and defeated from the constant stress, anxiety, and panic over what’s going on in our lives and in our world. When we can start to shift towards a gratitude moment, we can start to lessen the intensity of stress and move towards a place of clarity, confidence, and strength. Will it remove stressful and anxious events? No. Those will still exist. However, we can now approach it with more confidence and strength than we did before through our prayers and petitions to God.
REFLECTION CHECKPOINT: Have you ever tried to lessen your anxiety through a gratitude moment? How did it work for you?
Hi God! Thank you for everything you have done and provided for me throughout my life. Without your presence, I would not have been able to get to where I am today. I want to keep our relationship strong and know I need to bring everything to you. Some things just don’t feel worth sharing, yet I know you know it all. Help me to bring everything to you. To ask for everything. Share my hurts on everything. Celebrate all my wins. You want it all God, and you deserve it all. It’s in your name, we pray. Amen.
