Finding Strength in Weakness || Manna for the Mind #379

Isaiah 40:29

NASB – He gives strength to the weary, And to the one who lacks might He increases power.

NLT – He gives power to the weak and strength to the powerless.

VOICE – God strengthens the weary and gives vitality to those worn down by age and care.

Strength in Times of Weakness

In the context of Isaiah 40, the Israelites are coming out of exile. They are feeling powerless and abandoned. To hear that God would give them strength would reassure them, which would have been consistent with prior teachings they had received about God. This principle continues into the New Testament through Jesus’ teaching in Matthew 11:28, where He invites believers to come to Him and find rest. Historically, the Israelites were a smaller nation that was often oppressed by larger empires. However, God repeatedly delivered them from the danger of these enemies. Culturally, the strength was connected to military power, but God redefines strength as sustaining those who are . Paul showcases how God’s power is perfected through our weaknesses. This connects to the work of Christ, who brought salvation and strength to all of creation via His sacrifice.

REFLECTION CHECKPOINT: How have you found God’s strength in your life? Thinking back to Matthew 11:28 – where have you found rest through God’s presence?

Working Through Your Weaknesses

Acknowledging our own limitations is difficult, but necessary. No one wants to admit we have flaws, we have imperfections, or that we have issues. When we do, we’re often judged and looked down upon by our friends, family, and strangers. We can be bullied, teased, and punished because we have short-comings and cannot live up to the standards, either realistic or unrealistic, set by our guardians, our workplace, and society. As Christians, we tend to understand that our weaknesses is a place where we can find God’s strength.

Through those weaknesses, and the hardships that come with them, we tend to lean on God for strength and guidance to learn how to navigate through them. We can do this through sharing the grief of the hardships that we’ve dealt with. When we share those hardships, we can begin to process and heal from situations that may have hindered us in the past. Situations that we may not have realized that harmed us and traumatized us. When we start to work through the healing process, we can learn about those weaknesses and how our vulnerabilities can be come places of healing, compassion, and wisdom It could be through taking measures to strengthen ourselves through them (like taking a class to bolster a skill.) It could be transitioning environments to best suit our gifts (like changing environments, gaining support, or building new skills.) Whatever we do, we lean into God’s guidance and commands so that we can best utilize our weaknesses for the plan that He has set out before us.

REFLECT CHECKPOINT: What weaknesses do you have? How can do you use those weaknesses to find progress in life?
