Psalm 118:14

AMP – The Lord is my strength and song, And He has become my salvation.

NRSVUE – The Lord is my strength and my might; he has become my salvation.

VOICE – He is my strength, and He is the reason I sing; He has been there save me in every situation.

Deliverance of Strength and Worship

In the context of ancient Israel, strength was connected with military might and protection. The psalmist recognizes that true strength comes from God, not from our abilities or resources. Throughout the Old Testament, God is pictured as a warrior and protector of His children. It also represents a personal relationship with God, showing that we can trust and depend on Him in times of trouble. A “song” describes a response of praise and worship. Songs were common ways to share joy, gratitude, and remembrances of God’s actions. God is only only a source of strength, but a reason for joy and celebration.

Salvation describes the transformative work of God in the life of a believer. It can be understood physically – a deliverance from enemies or danger. It can also be understood spiritually – a deliverance from sin and other. The concept of God as a savior is fulfilled in the New Testament through Jesus. The psalmist is experiencing this transformative work personally, showing the testimony of God’s faithfulness and mercy.

Paths of Deliverance

Salvation is not just a past event, but a present reality and a future hope in Christ. Our deliverance from the bondage of sin is just a single of event that happened once almost 2,000 years ago. It’s a reality of a lifestyle we still have today. We are delivered from the bondage of sin. We are no longer held tight to the spiritual consequences of sin, for Jesus bore the consequences of sin on the cross. This doesn’t mean, however, that we will never see consequences of our sinful behavior. While God gifts us a “forgive and forget” mindset when it comes to our sinful behavior on earth, we will still deal with the consequences from our earthly relationships and situations.

Trust in God’s deliverance in every aspect of life, both spiritually and physically. Physically, we described the deliverance to be from enemies or danger. We may not have life-altering dangers around us, but our struggles with mental health, relationships, and careers, and more can create a feeling of danger. While our relationship with God can help us find guidance and wisdom, God also provides us effective resources in our everyday life. This could be therapists, hobbies, medications, date nights – you name it, God will guide us toward resources that can help us. Spiritually, we are called to find a community to help us walk through life. It’s okay to look around to find a body of believers that you vibe with. It’s okay to look around to find a church that makes you feel comfortable and safe. We’re all exploring different recipes to get to the same outcome. God will meet you where you decide to go, and you will find spiritual deliverance through Him with the hands and feet of humanity.
