Feeling Thirsty? || Manna for the Mind #428

Exodus 17:3

NASB – But the people were thirsty for water there; and they grumbled against Moses and said. “Why is it that you have brought us from Egypt, to kill us and our children and our livestock with thirst?”

NRSVUE – But the people thirsted for water, and the people complained against Moses and said, “Why did you bring us out of Egypt, to kill us and our children and livestock with thirst?”

VOICE – But the people were so thirsty for water, they complained to Moses and leveled accusations against him. ISRAELITES: Why did you lead us out of Egypt? Was it to kill all of us – our children and livestock included – with this thirst?

Quenching Their Thirst

The community is facing a whole new threat to life. God split the Red Sea to rescue them from the Egyptians and provided the manna for the sustenance that they would have needed to live off of. Now, they need water and need to depend on God again to provide. The people complained to…Moses. Why? They didn’t trust God and wanted to challenge who God appointed to lead them. Their complaints led them to forgot how God provided for them in the past, especially when current hardships are happening.

Egypt was a place of oppression, forced labor, and death. Fear caused Israel to remember them as though slavery was more preferable than depending on God. God brought them out of slavery into a new holy community, lead toward the promised land. The concern include their families and livestock, showing that it affected all parts of their life. God would provide the water, showing that He still had faith in them despite they not having faith in God.

REFLECTION CHECKPOINT: If you were them, would you trust God and Moses to provide for you?

Quenching All Types of Thirst

Thirst is one of the common themes that we see in the Bible. What does it mean and how does it lead us to the living water that is Jesus?

Thirst is the Hebrew verb tsame’ (tsaw-may’). When we see thirst in stories about the wilderness, we can see it as a reminder to trust in God’s provision at all times. When we see thirst in stories about battles, we can see it as a reminder that God will sustain us. This sets the tone for who Jesus’s arrival in the Gospel. God is offering living water in the form of Jesus. Jesus shows us provision for living a life according to God’s standards. Jesus shows us how to utilize God’s wisdom and strength during our times of battles and stress.

God meets our physical and spiritual needs. It may be harder for us to rational what that means for us today given our current society. We are not often stuck out in the wilderness, in dire need of food or water. However, we can trust that God will guide us towards the resources to survive. We can utilize our financial resources to provide for things like food, heat, clothes, etc. When we struggle in any capacity to meet our basic needs, God will guide us to different places and resources to meet our needs.

Spiritually, when we feel thirst, it’s a sign that we need to return to God. To rush back to the source and find renewal in whatever way we need. We may need a good word, and look into the Bible find our thirst being quenched that way. We may need to worship and sing, and look to your favorite worship song and either belt it out or sit in silence and reflect. We may need to just pray, so we sit there and talk to God about all the things that weigh heavy on our chest. Whatever way your thirst needs to be quenched, seek God and find which way works best for your situation.

It’s also a social reminder that we need to ensure all people in all communities are taken care of. There are places around the world that people do not have access to clean water. As a community, we can work together to fight for proper systems that allow for people to have this access without any gatekeeping. For us, this looks like helping out at water distribution centers, working to become a water distribution center, and voicing our concerns to ensure nothing destroys our current systems (hence why there is such a push against AI data centers). It’s also encourage your representatives to fight for legislation that gives this access to all communities. Whichever way makes more sense for your community, lean on God to help you be His hands and feet.

I leave you with the words from John 4:10. We touched on how Jesus is the living water above, so I want to encourage to read this verse. Pray this verse. See what God speaks to you and see what parts of you need to be quenched.

John 4:10 Reflection

NASB – Jesus replied to her, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is who is saying to you, ‘Give Me a drink,’ you would have asked Him, and He would have given you living water.”

NRSVUE – Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God and who it is that is saying to you, ‘Give me a drink,’ you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water.”

VOICE – JESUS: You don’t know the gift of God or who is asking you for a drink of this water from Jacob’s well. Because if you did, you would have asked Him for something greater; and He would give you the living water.

REFLECTION CHECKPOINT: What is God saying to you in this verse? What parts of you need to be quenched?
