Welcome back to “Worship with Me,” my music series, which introduces you to some of my favorite worship music. I like to share information from the artist about the meaning of the song and some of my favorite lyrics.
Since we’re in the Christmas season, this and the next four Sundays will be about some of my favorite Christmas music. I hope you’re enjoying it and are ready for the season. I recognize and acknowledge that the holiday season isn’t always easy for everyone due to grief, lost relationships, and the general chaos of life. I hope these songs will bring at least a few minutes of your day.
Today’s song is “O Holy Night” by VoicePlay. O Holy Night is a Christmas carol that focuses on the birth of Jesus and the embodiment of God in the flesh. The birth of Jesus is a night that’s sacred and a night of divine acts and glory. The song opens by describing how we need a savior and how God sent Jesus to bear the burdens of us sinners. It’s the breaking of the old creation with a new formation of a new creation, beginning with this divine baby.
Verse 3 is all about what we need in our world today:
Truly He taught us to love one another;
His law is love and His Gospel is Peace
Chains shall He break, for the slave is our brother
and in his name all oppression shall cease.
The message of Jesus is to love one another. He used his teachings and his ministry to represent love and peace. We often use his teachings to beat others down or condemn others. While scripture teaches us that it’s helpful to help point out sin, we must do it with love and care. If we use it with anger and malice, we’re misrepresenting the Gospel and abusing those who might not have or were questioning their relationship with Christ. We find that chains will be broken when we share it with love. People will be free from the bondage of sin. Those who were enslaved to their addictions are now free. The oppression people face spiritually will cease. They will not be crushed by the weight of life but will find freedom and strength through Christ.
Next week, we’ll discuss “Born on Christmas Day” by Brad Paisley. Until then, stay blessed.
