John 8:12

12          Again, therefore, Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. He who follows me will not walk in the darkness, but will have the light of life.”

What the Light Brings

During the Feast of Tabernacles, large lamps were lit in the temple. This represents the pillar of fire that guided the Israelites in the wilderness. (see Exodus 13:21) By Jesus claiming that He was the light of the world, He told the world that He is the divine source that would guide all humanity. Following Jesus is our commitment to Him as a result. Following Him avoids our path in darkness. Darkness often represented sin, ignorance, and separated from God in biblical contexts. There’s a transformation relationship with Christ that leads us to moral and spiritual clarity. We will receive the light of life. We will receive guidance, truth, and eternal life. This light is about an internal presence that brings life and vitality. This promise of assurance of salvation is a call to live in the reality of Christ’s light.

REFLECTION CHECKPOINT: How can you bring the light of Christ to all people you meet this holiday season?

Shining When the Light Feels Dull

It’s good to be curious about how reflecting this light during Christmas is supposed to be. Christians are called to walk in the light every day. Now, some days do not feel like this is possible. Some days feel heavier and darker than others. Some days make it feel like it would take a lot of strength just to roll out of bed, so how can we bring about the light on these days. Walking in the light is about making the intentional choices that reflect your faith and commitment to Christ. These are choices that says, “No matter how rough I feel, I trust that God will help me through it.” You’re going to make the choice that you will still share Christ’s love and compassion no matter how frustrated and tired you feel. The light shines from the heart, where the Holy Spirit resides. The strength of the Holy Spirit will carry you through those tough moments and guide you to victory on the other side. We celebrate the start of that victory movement this Christmas season with the birth of our Savior.
