Isaiah 9:6

6             For a child is born to us. A son is given to us; and the government will be on his shoulders. His name will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

Many Titles of a Newborn

Jesus is known as a Wonderful Counselor. Jesus meets us where we are with all our problems and guides us to work through them using God’s word. Jesus is our Mighty God. Being God the Son, the human form of Jesus was God incarnate coming down to earth to show humanity what it means to live like God. Jesus is our everlasting Father through God. As the creator of humanity, and his presence being shown before the world was even created, this shows the power and dominion Jesus has. As the prince of peace, Jesus provides us with a calm resilience and endurance to overcome all evils we face. Let’s look deeper at these four titles and see what else we can learn

REFLECTION CHECKPOINT: Based on your relationship and walk with Christ, what title connects to Jesus the most for you?

Many Names for a Divine Being

Wonderful Counselor

This is a title that suggests wisdom and guidance that goes beyond human understanding. Jesus would provide divine counsel and direction, shown through His teachings and parables. These often provided the wisdom needed to help overcome all trials that people are facing in their current lives. The lessons taught in the Bible were as valuable now as they were then. When we can read through his teachings and stories and understand the imagery and the context that they would apply to back then, we can find how to apply them to today.

Mighty God

This is a title that identifies Jesus as God Himself, fulfilling the concept of the Trinity when Jesus recognized as fully God. Jesus being a “mighty” God shows His strength and power. This reminds me about how Jesus was present at beginning of the world’s creation. To show that power and intricacy over a mass expanse is unfathomable to begin with, and to recognize that this same power resided in the lowly servant that came to show us how to live as God created. The intentionality of God is fully known, and it’s easy to see how close of a relationship He yearns for us to have.

Everlasting Father

This is a title that describes Jesus’s eternal nature and role as a fatherly figure to His followers. This isn’t “Father” as in God the Father, but it’s about showing His care protection and eternal existence. God being our heavenly father can offer us comfort and assurance. I’ve often felt this in times of grief. When I’ve been hurt by people that I thought were safe, when I’ve lost people to death or disagreements, when I’ve screwed up parts of my life that felt secure – God the Father is there. Ready to hear my screams, my doubts, my frustrations, my tears, and more. He is there, waiting for me to embrace Him when I am ready. God respects that space and gives us the choice to come boldly and confidently. To come messily and snooty. To come anxious and depressed. To come relieved and panicked. God takes us, listens to us, and loves us as we are.

Prince of Peace

This is a title that describes how Jesus will bring peace to the world. This peace comes through reconciliation with God. This peace is something that the world cannot provided – a right standing with God. This peace brings about accepting that we are flawed, imperfect, and have sinned. This peace is acknowledging this without guilt or shame. This peace is about being vulnerable and asking for forgiveness. This peace is about the discomfort of change. This is about working towards being the person that God created you to be. This peace is something that the world cannot give, but it can only come from God!

REFLECTION CHECKPOINT: We just went through the different titles Isaiah described Jesus to be. Did you learn anything new or realize something that might not have before going through this?
