Micah 5:2

2            But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, being small among the clans of Judah, out of you one will come out to me who is to be ruler in Israel; whose goings out are from of old, from ancient times.

Bethlehem Set the Path

Bethlehem was the birthplace of King David. Ephrathah is the region or clan that was associated with Bethlehem. This prophecy shows the humility of the town, which archaeological evidence supports. Bethlehem’s insignificance among the more prominent clans of Judah shows God’s tendency to choose the lowly for His divine works. This prophecy previews Jesus. The future Messiah wouldn’t just be political but spiritual. His expectations were to lead Christians as a shepherd leads his sheep. Jesus was around before the creation of the world came to be. Jesus is not a created being but has existed eternally with God.

REFLECTION CHECKPOINT: God often used the lowly and humble for his divine plan. How can you make yourself humble as we head to the new year?

Promises for an Eternity

Jesus as God fulfilled His promise of a Messiah, we can have hope and confidence that He will fulfill all His promises to us. Why did Jesus come at this time? Well – why did Jesus come before this time? To help us recognize that all of God’s promises will come through. God promises that He will always be with us. Jesus promises peace despite the evil in the world. God promises to provide everything that we need to survive our daily life. The ultimate promise of eternal life is something that’s provided through faith in Jesus. God promises healing of all types. There are more promises, but these promises are something we can all believe in. Micah was written somewhere between 750 and 686 BC. This was a prophecy almost 800 years in the making. God’s fulfilling the promise made to Abraham as well – a promise made in about 1500 BC. There’s an eternality to God’s promises, one that we can rely one 3,500 years after the promise made to Abraham.

REFLECTION CHECKPOINT: What promise of God are you hanging on to by faith?
