Welcome back to another chapter in our “Let’s Listen To” series! If you’re new to this, I welcome you! This series is about sharing some of my favorite contemporary Christian tracks. I talk about anything from the artist’s explanation of the song’s meaning, how I connected with the song, and some of my favorite verses.
Today’s song we’re diving deep into is “Close” by Tauren Wells by Steven Furtick. This track comes from his 2020 album titled “Citizens of Heaven.” You might be familiar with this track, the title track, or another one of his hit songs, including: “Like You Love Me,” “Famous For” featuring Jen Johnson, “Until Grace” featuring Gary LeVox from Rascal Flatts, or “Million (Good Like That)” featuring Kirk Franklin. This album was an amazing one for me. It came out shortly before the US COVID-19 pandemic began, and we were all locked at home, which gave me ample time to listen to this album forwards and backward. Tauren’s style of music is always upbeat, catchy, and a great mood-lifter. While he can lift my spirits, he can also hit me right in my feels with tenderhearted and impactful lyrics. I’ve done a blog about “God’s Not Done With You” earlier, and that passion also shows in this song and album.
“Close” is a great song to keep close to your heart. It’s a reminder that God is always close to us. Life has many chances to throw situations at us where we feel God is far away—moments where life feels too much. This song reminds me that when I feel like life is heavy and I want to shut myself out from it, God is always close by to hear my cries, listen to my pain, and love me through it all.
No articles or resources have Tauren Wells explaining the meaning of this song, so it’s time for me to share my favorite lyrics with you.
The pre-chorus says this:
You move in the stillness,
You move in the stillness,
closing the distance
Now I can feel it,
Now I can feel You
Your voice isn’t hidden,
Your voice isn’t hidden
I just got to listen, listen
This mindset is hard for me to wrap my mind around regarding God. God moves in the background in ways that aren’t easily seen or comprehended with our eyes and ears. God meets us where we are, no matter how close or far we are in our relationship. That’s what it means when it talks about God closing the distance. We can feel when God is close to us. We feel the warmth inside when God wraps his arms around us. We feel the joy inside of us when God tells us he loves us. God’s voice is always present. God’s always speaking to us in ways that help us comprehend what he’s calling us to do. All we need to do is listen. In what ways do you listen? For me, I hear a lot through the reading of scripture and studying for my blog writing. For me, songs like this place a message in my heart to wrestle with and talk with God about. Let me know in the comments below how you hear God the most.
The bridge to this song is so good as well:
And I will not fear
I know You’re right here
No matter where I go
I know I will never be alone
And I will not fear
I know You’re right here
And no matter where I go
I know I will never be alone-one
(Alone)
I know I will never be alone-one
It’s the perfect message to walk away with: God is always with us, and we shouldn’t be fearful because of that. God walks alongside us at all times. We’ll never be alone. We can’t be alone. The God of the universe created us to ensure we’ll never be alone. God even stated that it’s not God for man to be alone. Remember that God is with us, and we are not alone.
That wraps us up here! Next week is the start of our next series about Genesis 12:1-3 and God’s promises to Abraham. I’m ready for this journey, and I hope you are too. Until then, stay blessed!
