Eternal Life and God’s Presence || Earth 2.0 || Part 4 (FINALE)

a planet earth with the sun shining through it

Revelation 22:1-6

1             Then the angel showed me a river with the water of life, clear as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb.

2             It flowed down the center of the main street. One each side of the river grew a tree of life, bearing twelve crops of fruit, with a fresh crop each month. The leaves were used for medicine to heal the nations.

3             No longer will there be a curse upon anything. For the throne of God and of the Lamb will be there, and his servants will worship him.

4             And they will see his face, and his name will be written on their foreheads.

5             And there will be no night there – no need for lamps or sun – for the Lord God will shine on them. And they will reign forever and ever.

6             Then the angel said to me, “Everything you have heard and seen is trustworthy and true. The Lord God, who inspires his prophets, has sent his angel to tell his servants what will happen soon.

The angel serves as a divine messenger, guiding John through the heavenly revelations. The imagery of the river of life should take us back to the Garden of Eden, where a river flowed out to the water the garden. It symbolizes eternal life and sustenance provided by God. The water being clear as crystal shows that it was pure. This purity reflects how perfect the new creation is and how it is free from sin and corruption. The source of the river is the throne, which shows that life and sustenance comes directly from God and Jesus. The throne represents authority and power, and its mention underscores the divine rule and focus of God and Jesus in the new creation. Just as the physical water sustains life, the water of life represents the eternal sustenance and satisfaction found in a relationship with God. Things of this world come and go. Our likes change as the times change. Our focuses adapt as our situations around us change. Yet, our heavenly creator and his teachings stay the same. His promises to us are eternal. We have access to God at all times, through Jesus, who’s sacrifice made on our behalf tore down the barrier to God.

The idea of a main street suggests that this place is one of prominence and importance, showing that this life-giving water is open to all people. Streets represent the path we should take in life. The tree of life represents eternal life and our relationship with God. The fact that it stands on both sides of the river, suggesting its massive availability and the complete restoration of access to eternal life for believers. The monthly yield shows a continuous and unending supply – a source of God’s provision. This contrasts with the cycles of scarcity and abundance experienced in our world, focusing on constancy and sufficiency of God’s provision in this city. The healing leaves suggest a restoration not only of people but of grander communities, pointing to both the reconciliation and peace that characterize the new creation. This healing is comprehensive; it looks at the spiritual, physical, and relational brokenness caused by sin. These leaves for the healing of the nations looks at God’s desire for healing and reconciliation among all peoples. Christians are called to be agents of healing and reconciliation in the world. In a world that is full of war, fighting, bullying, and more. We don’t want to be the one to add to the fire that’s blazing in front of us. We need to work towards using the water from this source to put out this fire. We need to bring restoration to our communities. Relationships of any source that has concerns, fights, or any situation that creates a huge divot in reconciliation should still reconcile their relationship. It doesn’t mean that they need to go back to where they were, but it means that we are treating each other respectfully – no matter how much we disagree. We are all human. We are all broken. We are all trying to make it work in this world. It’s time we do our best to make sure this happens.

The absence of the curse shows the restoration of creation to the original state of perfection and harmony with God. Mentioning both God and the Lamb highlights the unity and cooperation of power between God and Jesus. This worship is a fulfillment of our responsibility to worship in spirit and truth, and a direct contrast to the idolatry and false worship condemned throughout the Book of Revelation. The identity of believers as servants of God highlights the call to serve Him faithfully not, in anticipation of eternal service in His presence. A lot of Christians like to force the push of service and the push of the second coming as a way to make sure you do right and get to heaven. We should be willing to help take care of your neighbors, speak and act out for the marginalized and work towards sharing the compassion, grace, of mercy at all times. If we do this, then the blessing of heaven will be there regardless. Now we don’t know when this will happen, which is where the push to do this yesterday. However, we should work to do this as soon as we can so that we can work to make the world a better place as soon as we can.

In a biblical context, seeing God’s face is a privilege denied to humanity since the fall. It represents the fullness of salvation and the believer’s transformation into becoming like Christ. In the ancient world, marking or sealing represents possessions and authority. It reflects the fulfillment of the New Covenant promise where God’s law is instilled in his believer’s hearts, through the Holy Spirit. It assures believers of their eternal security and ultimate protection, where the overcome is promised God’s name written upon them. The promise of seeing God’s face signifies the ultimate intimacy and fellowship with Him. This promise of seeing him ultimately knows that we will be together with him in a simple community is something to yearn for. We get a closeness with God that not many people of the Bible got to experience.

Night often represents sin, evil, and separation from God. The absence of night indicates the full presence of God, where sin and evil do not exist. In ancient times, lamps and the sun were needed for visibility and daily life. The absence of the need for these traditional light sources shows the transformative nature of God’s glory, which surpasses all earthly provisions. The shining from God on His people signifies His direct presence and flavor. The divine light represents God’s holiness, purity, and truth, illuminating the lives of the redeemed. The concept of an eternal reign shows a restoration of the dominion originally intended for humanity. This eternal reign is not just an authoritative position, but also a participation in the life and purpose of God – showing the ultimate victory over sin and death through Jesus. The directly illumination by God highlights the intimate relationship that we will enjoy with Him. This encourages a deeper pursuit of God’s presence now. Like I mentioned earlier, this should encourage to make sure we are right with God now. Not because we should be afraid of the alternative or that we need to experience the danger of life. It’s simply because the good is too good to pass up.

Angels often serve as messengers in biblical narratives, conveying God’s revelations to humans. The assurance that the words are “faithful and true” underscores the reliability and trustworthiness of the prophecy. The connection to the prophets shows the continuity and consistency of God’s revelation from the Old Testament and New Testament. The revelation is intended for us to be encouraged. The concept of “soon” suggests a sense of urgency and anticipation, encouraging believers to remain vigilant and faithful. The idea of being “faithful and true” assures us of the trustworthiness of God’s promises and prophecies. We can trust the Scriptures as a dependable guide for faith and practices. God’s word is to be believed at all times. The things the Bible describes is not something atypical from what we experience in our world today. Same things just a different flavor. It allows us to truly see how we can overcome the struggles we find in this world. It’ll require our true faith in God and an obedience to go do what we need to do to honor God and fulfill his plan for us.
