Welcome back to another chapter in our “Let’s Listen To” series! If you’re new to this, I welcome you! This series is about sharing some of my favorite contemporary Christian tracks. I talk about anything from the artist’s explanation of the song’s meaning, how I connected with the song, and some of my favorite verses.
Today, we’re talking about a song that’s an oldie and yet still new. Welcome to “Great is Your Faithfulness” by TEMITOPE. TEMITOPE (the-ME-toh-PEH) is a singer and activist from Nashville with Nigerian and British backgrounds. When his parents immigrated to the US, he got to experience the beauty of diversity that he carries around today. His passion for unity through diversity has given him his songwriting abilities and share his message with the world. His top performing song, “GREAT IS YOUR FAITHFULNESS,” released in early 2022, started to gain radio airplay in February 2022.
You may be thinking, “Marc, is this just a cover of the classic hymn?” My answer is partly. This reason is why I mentioned that today’s song is both old and new. The bridge contains the first verse of the hymn, but the rest of the song is his beauty and masterpiece. It’s a beautiful modern-take understanding of the song, allowing new generations to connect with an old classic. I’ll talk more about this in my lyric breakdowns.
The chorus has a great message:
So I’ll praise You
Even when my voice is tired.
I’ll praise You
When I don’t understand
‘Cause You’re worthy
Great is Your faithfulness
To me
I’ll praise God in all circumstances because God is worthy of it at all times. It is a simple message that contains both truth and conviction. We should always praise God because it helps ensure a gratitude mindset. A gratitude mindset allows us to continue seeing the positive when the world around us falls into chaos. Yet, how often do we do this? How often do we still see the good when the world falls apart? If you’re like me, it’s not often. I often have a negative mindset, spiraling on thoughts not coming from God. Why? Because it’s easy for me. It’s hard to stay positive when life is hard, but that’s why God doesn’t give us a positive mindset. God gives us a gracious one.
Great is Your faithfulness
O God, my Father
There is no moment You’ll turn back on me.
You never change
Your compassions find me always
As you have been, You forever will be.
This verse is where the classic comes in, but also with a modern flavor. It’s the consistent message that has lasted many decades: God will never leave us, so I will always praise you. I love the idea that compassion from God will always find me. No matter how far I stray from my relationship with him, the love of God is always there waiting for me. What better reason is there to praise God?
That wraps us up. Next week starts our new series on anxiety called “Being Pulled Apart.” Talk about something old and something new.
