Here’s the Song!
As the title and thumbnail say, this month’s song is a very famous one by Jeremy Camp. It’s called: “He Knows.” It’s an old song (music-wise), released in 2015. This song was my introduction to Jeremy Camp. I don’t know much about his music. The only other song of his that I listen to is “Dead Man Walking,” which is a more recent song. I love the message behind He Knows and am glad Spotify recommended it for this song blog. Let me tell you what to expect from this blog:
- We’ll talk about the meaning behind the song with possible quotes from the artists.
- I’ll also add some of my perceptions of the song based on its meaning.
- We’ll talk about 2-3 of my favorite lyrics and break them down as well, adding some of my thoughts to the song.
Without further ado, let’s start the next installment of “Let’s Listen To…” with the song “He Knows” by Jeremy Camp.
Behind the Song
This song was a song of comfort for Jeremy Camp. As he mentions in his book “I Still Believe,” he speaks about losing his first wife to cancer and losing a baby to miscarriage with his wife, Adrienne. From the article (link at the end of the blog) from wayfm.com, Jeremy says: “The best place to go when we’re saying ‘No one understands my pain. No one understands my hurt -‘ It’s Christ. He fully understands. I wrote this song in that place, saying, ‘God, I’m so thankful that You, above anybody else, knows my pain.'”
This paints the song in a new light for me. The title “He Knows” concept automatically gauges the same backstory concept to me. “He Knows” refers to the concept that God knows what’s going on. It paints it in a more natural light for me, though. The realization that his song comes from a realistic place of hurt for him builds the emotional connection stronger for me. Check out some of these lyrics.
Lyrics. Lyrics. What do you mean? – Part 1
I want to look at the second half of the first verse and the pre-chorus. Here’s what it says:
“And how hard your fight has been
How deep the pain within
Wounds that no else has seen
Hurts too much to show
All the doubt you’re standing in between
And all the weight that brings you to your knees.”
Jeremy talks about recognizing your trials. This needs to acknowledge the fight you’ve been battling and the pain you’ve endured. This is where you wouldn’t talk to others because it would open doors you are trying to close. It’s funny that this is the time this song comes up. I’m writing this at the end of September after I acknowledged that I couldn’t write a “September Breakdown” blog because there were a lot of rough spots during September for me. That verse actually resonates with what I was dealing with. It would be a lot of pain to write it all out. It’s almost like “He Knows” that this situation is something I was going to be going through.
The pre-chorus leads us to the potential breakthrough. Remember, this song comes from: “No one understands my pain.” All the doubt you deal with is to the point of breaking you. You’re falling to your knees, crumbling under all that pressure, but…He knows.
God knows all that we deal with. He knows all the hurts, pain, anger, frustrations, anxieties, and more. If you deal with it, He knows about it. When you’re at this point, give all of it to God. Please give what you’ve been burdened with to him. Please give what you’ve been fighting to him. Give your anxieties to him. I believe Peter said something about that in 1 Peter. Jesus teaches us to come to him when we feel all this pain and pressure. Look at Matthew 11:28-30:
28 “Come to me, all you who are struggling hard and carrying heavy loads, and I will give you rest.
29 Put on my yoke, and learn from me. I’m gentle and humble. And you will find rest for yourselves.
30 My yoke is easy to bear, and my burden is light.
Jesus teaches us to go to him. Those who struggle and carry a lot of pressure and burdens need to go to Jesus and find rest in him. Jesus is gentle and humble with us. Being gentle and humble to ourselves is hard to accomplish sometimes, but we learn how to do it from Jesus.
I want to leave this here, but I want to discuss the bridge more.
Lyrics. Lyrics. What do you mean? – Part 2
The bridge says the following:
“Every time that you feel forsaken
Every time that you feel alone
He is near to the brokenhearted
Every tear
He knows.”
What does it mean to be forsaken? Forsaken means to be “abandoned or deserted.” How many of us have felt abandoned or alone in our lifetime? During the pandemic, feeling alone is easy because we’ve been taught to be socially distant from others. Even though some of the restrictions are loosened, and we can gather together in small groups, restaurants, churches, etc., it’s still easy to feel alone. I’ve often said you can feel alone in a crowded room, which remains valid. You feel like you’re hiding behind a LITERAL mask. It’ll be hard to feel comfortable again being around others, but it will improve over time. I got off track here, didn’t I?
Jeremy actually references some scripture in the bridge. Check out Psalm 34:18, which says:
18 The Lord is close to the brokenhearted; he saves those whose spirits are crushed.
God is always close to us. No matter what. He knows everything from the number of hairs on our heads (Luke 12:7) to every tear we shed. Remember this, if you think God won’t understand what you’re going through…He knows!
That wraps up this edition of “Let’s Listen To…”. I hope you’ve enjoyed my discussion on the song: “He Knows” by Jeremy Camp. Let me know your thoughts on the song and whether or not you agree with me. Put your thoughts on the song in the comments below. I would love to see what your thoughts are. Also, this might be the last one for 2020. I’m considering doing a December series of “Let’s Listen Too…” that talks about all my favorite Christmas songs, both classics and contemporary and both Christian and secular. Let me know what you think. Stay blessed!
