Rejoice Overload || Philippians 4:4 || Manna for the Mind #107

Welcome to Day 107 of the “Manna for the Mind” devotional! This series is about taking scripture passages (typically 1-3 verses) and building our understanding of their teachings through their context and connecting scripture. I believe that doing this helps us understand how to be the type of human that God created us to be.

Today’s passage is Philippians 4:4. We’ll talk about what it means to delight in the Lord.

Philippians 4:4

AMPNLTMSG
4 Rejoice in the Lord always [delight, take pleasure in Him]; again I will say, rejoice!4 Always be full of joy in the Lord. I say it again—rejoice!4 Celebrate God all day, every day. I mean, revel in him!

Even in the confines of a prison, Paul encourages us to rejoice. This verse teaches us a crucial mindset that outward circumstances don’t need to dictate our inner attitudes. Whatever happens to us doesn’t have to affect our feelings. The peace that Jesus brings isn’t the absence of chaos but the peace in the middle of chaos. We feel what we need to feel, but we don’t stay there. We also have faith and trust in Jesus to strengthen us and continue forward.

It’s easy to get discouraged about unpleasant circumstances or take unimportant events too seriously. If you haven’t been joyful lately, let the Holy Spirit remind you that true joy is found in the Lord and the promise of his second coming. A lot of Christians keep in mind the hope of eternal life where there will be no pain, evil, sin, and more. However, we can keep our focus now that God overcomes the unpleasant battles. God wins all battles that we face for us, and we can rely on his strength and our faith that victory will occur!

Philippians 3:1

AMPNLTMSG
1 Finally, my fellow believers, continue to rejoice and delight in the Lord. To write the same things again is no trouble for me, and it is a safeguard for you.1 Whatever happens, my dear brothers and sisters, rejoice in the Lord. I never get tired of telling you these things, and I do it to safeguard your faith.1 And that’s about it, friends. Be glad in God! I don’t mind repeating what I have written in earlier letters, and I hope you don’t mind hearing it again. Better safe than sorry—so here goes.

As a safeguard, Paul revisits the basics with these believers. The Bible serves as our moral and theological compass. It acts as a protective barrier, helping us filter our thoughts spiritually. Is what we’re thinking or doing by the will of God? Let’s consult the Bible. Unfortunately, churches and spiritual leaders often misinterpret the teachings due to a lack of understanding, denominational biases, and power agendas. This is why we, ourselves, need to study with the discernment power of the Holy Spirit.

Reading the Bible individually, studying it in groups, and hearing it taught at church makes us aware of corrections we need to make in our thoughts, attitudes, and actions. Knowing that the Bible keeps us alert against false teaching while pointing us to sound doctrine, wise choices, and a life-giving relationship with God. The Bible helps to point out the areas we’re weak in and how we can adjust our thoughts, words, and actions to best reflect God to those around us. Honestly, the last three months of studying the complicated topics of lust, sexual immorality, and suicide have really changed my perspective on what the Bible teaches and how I’ve misheard it. It’s been sobering, freeing, and disappointing because I see a lot of misinformation and misrepresentation of how it skews mindsets. This affirms the importance of studying the word.

Father God, thank you for your word and the power of discernment you’ve gifted us to understand the true nature of your teachings. Help us understand how to apply your teachings to our world today. We know they weren’t written for our culture but for your children. It’s in your name, we pray. Amen.
