Acceptable and Pleasing || Psalm 19:14 || Manna for the Mind #123

Welcome to Day 123 of the “Manna for the Mind” devotional! This series is about taking scripture passages (typically 1-3 verses) and building our understanding of their teachings through their context and connecting scripture. I believe that doing this helps us understand how to be the type of human that God created us to be.

Today’s passage is Psalm 19:14. We’ll discuss what it means for our words or thoughts to be pleasing to God.

Psalm 19:14

AMPNLTVOICE
14 Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart Be acceptable and pleasing in Your sight, O Lord, my [firm, immovable] rock and my Redeemer.14 May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be pleasing to you, O Lord, my rock and my redeemer.14 May the words that come out of my mouth and the musings of my heart meet with Your gracious approval, O Eternal, my Rock, O Eternal, my Redeemer.

Paul references this Psalm when discussing how everyone will know about God because nature proclaims God’s existence and power. This doesn’t cancel the need for missions and outreach, though. The message of God’s salvation is found in the Bible and must still be spread to the ends of the earth. Jesus commanded us to make disciples by sharing the truth of the gospel with others. This is not just a task for a few but a responsibility for all of us. While nature shows us God’s existence, the Bells show us salvation from God. God’s people must explain to others how to have a relationship with God, engaging us in the mission of spreading the gospel.

This verse underscores the transformative power of aligning our thoughts and words with God’s will. It’s a call to speak in a way that is not just acceptable, but pleasing in God’s eyes. What are the ‘meditations of my heart?’ This describes a solemn sound, often meaning an intimate prayer. It’s a case of ensuring your desires align with God’s desires. When we align our thoughts and words with the ability to give God everything we have with our lives and love our neighbors as Jesus loved us, we find the proper way to share God with those around us. This alignment allows us to see the world in new ways, seeing beauty in the things we overlook. Seeing compassion in the conversations that we usually want to speed through or just have for the sake of having it. This alignment is not just a duty, but a source of inspiration and motivation in our spiritual journey.

What more is there to say? Instead of my typical prayer, I want to leave this verse with you. This verse is not just a passage to read but a guiding principle to remember and apply as we continue to navigate life.

14           May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be pleasing to you, O Lord, my rock and my redeemer.
