Light Reveals, Teaches, and Guides

In the biblical context, “light” shows understanding, truth, and divine guidance. The imagery of the psalmist connects to the practice of reading and interpreting scripture, like the Levites reading the Torah and explaining it to the people. Light is also connected to Jesus, showing that the ultimate revelation of God’s Word is found in Him. Someone being simple means that they are humble or lack wisdom. In the cultural context of ancient Israel, wisdom was highly valued and being simple was for those who hadn’t attained the wisdom. 

Simplicity Is a Strength, Not a Weakness

The “simple” are those who approach God’s word with humility and openness. We should strive to maintain a teachable spirit. No one knows everything. No one should know everything. Why? Because God has gifted us all with different gifts, talents, and resources to complement one another and work towards a unified community. God’s principles and wisdom show us the path to do that. However, we can get so bogged down by the darkness that surrounds us in this world that we stumble off the path. It’s exactly why God’s teaching is light, and we can find our way back to the path through this light. We are to reflect the light of Christ. To shine it to all parts of our community in love and compassion, so that others can light their way and end the stumbling that we all tend to suffer from.

1. Are you approaching Scripture to understand or to consume?
2. When did God light your path before? 
3. Think about someone around that may be stumbling; how can you reflect Christ’s light to them?

Call to Action

Choose one passage of scripture and with it. Pray for God to give you understanding. Consider how you can reflect that understanding to someone around you.
