Idolatry Rhetoric Starts Here

The Israelites were surrounded by the nations that worshiped multiple gods, often represented by idols. The question asked was rhetorical, asking how one can compare YHWH to man-made gods. The Israelites were tempted many times to adopt the idolatrous practices of their neighbors. Yet, this question makes them think about whether it is worth it. Would it be worth it to replace YHWH’s wisdom, power, and holiness, with a false idol or god? The ancient Near East gods were often shown as humans or animals, and their powers were limited to specific domains. YHWH, God of Israel, is powerful over all Creation. 

Nothing Can Fully Replace God

Idolatry is futile. Anything we place on par with God – material possessions, status, relationships, and more – falls short of God. I recently heard a sermon from Pastor Tauren Wells (link at the end). It said there are many forms of happiness that we can get without God. Still, we can never get full happiness without God. That’s the full answer when it comes to idolatry. There are some things that we can find success in without God. Yet, we can never have the full story of what life is like without God. 

Idols for Us Do Not Lead Us 

Idols for us are often money, relationships, social media, and more. Any thing that takes priority in our life over God is an idol. It’s time for us to recenter on Christ. To rebuild our foundation through Christ’s teaching in the Gospels and allow for everything to be built upon that. Allow his love and mercy flow through your relationships with your significant other, friends, and family. Allow his care for the world to flow through your career and your influence on social media. Allow his teachings to guide how you act and talk. Use his selflessness and sacrifice as a baseline for our community interactions. We should not try to be like who we see on social media. We shouldn’t imitate those excelling in our career. Don’t try to be like another person in our social circle.

Embrace YHWH Above All

We can’t be another person. God creates each of us individually. We are called to live out who God called us to be. We should embrace the gifts of our time, talents, and treasures that He placed inside of us. 

Reflection Question

1. What idols are present in your life now? 
2. How are these idols replacing God without you truly realizing it?
3. How can God strengthen your resistance against those idols? 

Call to Action 

Take some time to think on this verse. Allow God’s presence to explore what idols are showing in your life. Ask for forgiveness for allowing that idol to take its presence. Then see how you can replace that idol with God’s presence.
