People worshipping joyfully together

Psalm 95:1-2

NASBNLTVOICE
1 Come, let’s sing for joy to the Lord, Let’s shout joyfully to the rock of our salvation.1 Come, let us sing to the Lord! Let us shout joyfully to the Rock of our salvation.1 Come, let us worship in song, a joyful offering to the Eternal. Shout! Shout with joy to the rock of our liberation.
2 Let’s come before His presence with a song of thanksgiving. Let’s shout joyfully to Him in songs with instruments.2 Let us come to him with thanksgiving. Let us sing psalms of praise to him.2 Come face-to-face with God, and give thanks; with loud and joyful voices, praise Him in songs.

Sing and Worship From the Heart

Singing for joy reflects a heart that is full of gratitude and reverence for God. In biblical times, music was a core part of a worship experience. The act of singing is a command to engage with God both emotionally and spiritually. To shout shows that worship should be exciting and full of life. God being described as a “rock” represents how strong, stable, and reliable He is. It provides a foundation for our faith when we see God as a fortress and protector. God is the stable source of our salvation. “Our salvation” describes God’s role as our deliverer and savior. When we look at the New Testament, Jesus is descried as our cornerstone. He fulfills the role of Rock and Savior, like the psalmist describes here.

Worship Comes in Different Styles

How many of us have been in community during a worship song and seen people worship in completely different ways? Some people close their eyes and sway while singing. Some people dance while singing. Some people raise one arm or both arms while singing. Our act of worship should be unique to us and describe our adoration for everything that God has done in our lives. He is our Protector, our Counselor, our Healer, our Father, our Encourager, our Teacher, and more. When we find ourselves in a place of worship whether through our prayer or through our playlist, we should commit all of ourselves to Him. I’ll find myself worshipping more openly by myself than in public – and that’s okay. As long as our reverence expresses our gratitude for God and our adoration for everything that He has done, is doing, and will do in the future.

REFLECTION CHECKPOINT: What is your favorite worship experience? Whether it was by yourself at home, at church, at a concert, or something in between.

The Thankfulness of Gratitude

In ancient Israel, thanksgiving was a key part of worship. They would often express it through offerings and sacrifices. Entering God’s presence with thanksgiving reflects acknowledging His power and provision. This aligns with what we read in the New Testament (1 Thessalonians 5:18) where believers are called to give thanks in all situations. Making a joyful noise is the best way to worship. In the Psalms, music and singing were main parts of worship because these psalms were used and refence in temple services and religious festivals. The joyful noise is not being loud, but it’s about a true heartfelt express of joy and worship for God. We are called to speak to each other with psalms, hymns, and music.

REFLECTION CHECKPOINT: What is one thing you are thankful to God for in this season of your life?

Recognizing Thanksgiving at its Core

Thanksgiving is not just a seasonal act. It’s a daily attitude that acknowledges God’s goodness and provisions. Think about what Paul says in Philippians 4:6: “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and pleading with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.” Even when we are struggling in seasons of anxiety and strife, Paul says to pray about it with both our pleads for help and with thanksgiving. When it comes to our thanksgiving – it can be hard to find that place of gratitude. For me, this was something I often struggled with through my seasons of anxiety, stress, and panic. It’s led me to recognize my gratitude for things I take for granted: my next breath, clothes in my closet, food in the fridge, and more things like that. When we start to recognize the basic things in a gratitude mindset, we start to see how God’s provisions are formed on a foundational level. It builds to the different things when it comes to key luxuries and desires of how we think life should go. It all is based on the path of God, but whatever that path will look like – we must be thankful for what God has allowed and what God spared us from.

REFLECTION CHECKPOINT: What is one think that you often overlook or take for granted that you are thankful God provided?

PRAY Action

Praise God for everything He has provided, is providing, and will provide in the future.

Read Philippians 4:4-7.

Ask God about all the things that you are pleading for rescue from. Share those with thanksgiving to God and feel His peace wash over you.

You are loved. You are cared for. You are valued. If no one has told you – I am thankful that you are here.
