Ephesians 4:2
| NASB | NLT | VOICE |
| 2 with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, | 2 Always be humble and gentle. Be patient with each other, making allowance for each other’s faults because of your love. | 2 Be humble. Be gentle. Be patient. Tolerate one another in an atmosphere thick with love. |
The Characteristics of God
Humility is about recognizing our own limitations and the greatness of God. It’s a call to put others before ourselves. Gentleness is about having strength under control. It’s how we can respond to others with kindness and compassion. In the Greco-Roman world, humility was viewed as a weakness, but God redefines it as strength. Patience allows us to walk through difficult circumstances and the shortcomings of others without being angry or upset. For the Ephesians, this was vital for uniting the church back together, helping believers to work through conflicts and difficulties in a way that honors God. To “bear with one another” means to walk with and support those around us, even when it’s hard. To do this in love is a deliberate choice to focus on the best for each other. This was a counter-cultural love in the early church, as it went beyond social, ethnic, and economic barriers – creating a new community in Christ Jesus.
REFLECTION CHECKPOINT: Look at your community and your place in it. How can you exemplify these characteristics in your life to honor God and love your neighbor?
Love For All
Loving is the binding force that enables us to endure and support one another. Endure is not a word we often think, or at least I often think, about when it comes to loving each other. To endure to me makes me think that we “put up with each other.” Like we don’t love them, but we don’t hate them, but we don’t agree with them. It’s a wrestling that goes back and forth between tolerating someone and ignoring someone. However, if you look at the definition of endure it says this: to suffer (something painful or difficult) patiently.
It’s a reminder to me that loving someone can feel painful for us at times. This is not saying that we should remain in unsafe or abusive situations. It means that we stay committed to seeking the good of others, even when it’s hard, while also pursuing justice, safety, and healthy boundaries. We watch those around us make harmful decisions that are deteriorating their life. We watch our world make decisions that strip away the rights to life for marginalized and oppressed communities, both locally and nationally. It breaks our heart when these decisions occur, right? Why? Because we have an inner love for our community and our world. We want to see each other, even those we can’t stand (and yes – that feeling does exist) not suffer at the hands of other humans. We want everyone to have the right to live the life that God created them to live, with the proper support and care needed to make that happen. We want to support all communities of people with resources, time, and energy to give everyone an equal quality of life. We can offer this through Christ’s agape love, sacrificing the abundance of our resources for the benefit of others. It’s about spreading the wealth to take care of the marginalized and oppressed, much like Christ calls us to do with the orphans and the widows. We are called to care for the lowly. It reminds me of what Jesus says in Matthew 25:35-36 (WEB): “for I was hungry and you gave me food to eat. I was thirsty and you gave me drink. I was a stranger and you took me in. I was naked and you clothed me. I was sick and you visited me. I was in prison and you came to me.’” This connects to today’s devotional in Matthew 25:40 (WEB): “…’Most certainly I tell you, because you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.’
When we feed the hungry, give water to the thirsty, clothe the naked, house the homeless, help the sick, and visit the imprisoned – we are showing care for Jesus. We are truly showcasing what it means to endure and support one another, ultimately reflecting Christ’s agape love to those often held to a lower social role in society.
REFLECTION CHECKPOINT: How can you go out and care for the lowly in your community?
PRAY Action
Praise God for the humility and gentleness He gifts to us. To help us be aware of our own limitations and see where He can use our weaknesses to His strength. To respond to use with kindness and compassion, even when we don’t deserve it.
Read Matthew 11:29
Ask God for the patience needed to progress in this world. To work and build up tolerance towards difficult circumstances and the faults of others without lashing out. To be patient with humanity as we navigate turmoil and work towards a greater good.
You deserve all the love with the world. You will find yourself a community that will endure and support you in all circumstances so you can live the life that God called you to live.
