Psalm 4:8
| NASB | NLT | VOICE |
| 8 In peace I will both lie down and sleep, For You alone, Lord, have me dwell in safety. | 8 In peace I will lie down and sleep, for you alone, O Lord, will keep me safe. | 8 Tonight I will sleep securely on a bed of peace because I trust You, You alone, O Eternal One, will keep me safe. |
Protection Through God
The psalmist has confidence in God’s protection and provision. In the ancient Near East, sleep was seen as a moment of vulnerability, where you are defenseless against enemies or the threats of nature. To be able to sleep in this state shows that there is a major sense of security and trust in God’s power. The psalmist trusts in God exclusively, showing how the psalmist has a personal relationship with God. The psalmist feels protected in God’s presence. Safety was a massive concern due to the frequent conflicts and threats that were coming from the surrounding nations. The assurance of safety from God reflects His role as a divine protector. This safety is not just physical protection, but it’s a spiritual one.
REFLECTION CHECKPOINT: How do you feel safe in God’s presence?
Rest is Important
Choosing to rest and sleep in peace is an act of faith. It’s very weird to think about it, but it’s true. When we’re caught up in stress and anxiety, we are usually restless. We are trying to figure out what caused the stress, what we can control and what we can’t, what the potential consequences are, how we can overcome and solve the stress, and so on. It’s mentally exhausting to think about all the steps I tend to go through when I’m stressed. When I can take a step back and rest, when I pause and reflect on what happened, involving God in the middle of it and with each step of the way, I can start to breathe easier. I can start to trust the plan that God has for me. I can rest that this plan is going to lead to the greatest outcome for me, regardless of how I feel about it in the moment.
That’s the major part – I may not like the plan that’s going to happen, but I am aware that God’s plan is going to be the greatest plan overall. Often, God’s plan may pull me into uncomfortable moments. Having tough conversations. Having to do tough actions. These things are not always the easiest to do. These things come with a divine source of strength, which comes through rest. When we’re worn down, what’s often the solution: sleep. Sleep repairs our bodies and minds, replenishes our energy, and allows us to relax. We can find the peace to rest because God protects and provides for us, and from that place of rest – we can participate in God’s doing. For those that experienced trauma and chronic anxiety, this kind of rest takes time and proper support. God is patient with your journey and does not shave you for the struggle that sleep can bring.
REFLECTION CHECKPOINT: What is one thing you can do today that would allow you to rest today?
PRAY Action
Praise God for the moments of rest that we can find. Where it can be a minute, an hour, or a night – rest restores us to do everything that God calls us to do.
Read Psalm 23
Ask God for a moment to rest, breathe, and reflect. Finding these moments to go over your days and moments where things went right and wrong, learning from each part, and working to be more Christ-like every day.
You deserve rest. When the world tells you to go constantly, God says rest and reflect.
