Healing Through Confession and Prayer || Manna for the Mind #357

James 5:16

NASB                  Therefore, confess your sins to one another, and pray for one another so that you may be healed. A prayer of a righteous person, when it is brought about, can accomplish much.

NLT                       Confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The earnest prayer of a righteous person has great power and produces wonderful results.

VOICE                So own up to your sins to one another and pray for one another. In the end, you may be healed. Your prayers are powerful when they are rooted in a righteous life.

Prayer + Confession = Healing

James highlights the importance of mutual accountability and transparency amongst Christians. Confession was a communal act, one that strengthened unity and spiritual growth. It’s not about shame, but resotration. Prayer was a communication route with God and is a way we can support each other. Praying for your community strengths its bonds and aligns with the idea of bearing one another’s burdens. To confess and pray, would guide you towards healing, both physically and spiritually. Confession and prayers lead to healing by removing the barriers of sin that can hinder your relationship with God and others.

James highlights the prayer of a righteous man. Righteousness describes being in right standing with God, often connected to faith and obedience. It’s not something that we envelop or create, but it is a result of our faith in Christ. James talks about prayer as powerful and effective when it comes from someone living in accordance with God’s will.

REFLECTION CHECKPOINT: One of the things that caught my attention with this verse is the focus of the “righteous person” and how their prayers can be effective. How do you believe that is?

Health Benefits of Confession and Prayer

Let’s break down what it means to confess and pray. These are two concepts highlighted by James that can lead to forgiveness, reconciliation, and the strengthening of a community.

The Greek word James uses for “confess” is exomologeó (ex-om-ol-og-eh’-o). This word is an outspoken acknowledgment that expresses one of three things depending on the context: a frank confession of sin; joyful praise of God; open assent to a truth. Overall, it focuses on a vocal, public agreement with God about personal guilt, his redemptive purposes, or with Jesus. James uses this word in the context of cultivating transparency and unity. This process of confession fosters proper pastoral care through spiritual and physical healing.

The Greek word James uses for “pray” is euchoomai (YOO-kho -my). It highlights an earnest attitude of a petition or desire, either to God through prayer or as a intense desire for others. James showcases prayer as a communal confession and health through direct, right-standing intercession.

Studying both words brings to minds the health effects of internalizing all the stressors, anxieties, fears, and panic that we run into in our day-to-day lives. I was always taught from a younger age that it’s better to release what’s weighing you down than to hold onto it because it causes health issues. Many people find that unprocessed stress can affect the body and mind – it keeps responding like there’s an ongoing threat. Over time, this can lead to the following:

  • Elevated cortisol levels, which can disrupt sleep, weight, and immune function.
  • Increased risk of heart disease due to prolonged high blood pressure and inflammation
  • Weakened immune system, making illness more frequent or slower to heal
  • Digestive problems like IBS, stomach pain, or appetite changes
  • Muscle tension and chronic pain, especially in the neck shoulders, and back.
  • Mental health strain, including anxiety, depression, and emotional burnout.

The emotions that we feel don’t just go away when we face them. We either feel through them, or they get stored up in the body until they can be released in some capacity. PPrayer and confession can be life-giving ways to bring burdens to light.

Prayer breaks isolation. Praying with someone and confessing those weights that you’ve been carrying can be so free and liberating. This reduces the emotional pressure behind things to bring them into light. Everything gets put out in the open. It creates a sense of support and security. You are sharing the raw emotions and events that have been too scary to name to someone that will hopefully share your best interest and help you through these tough times. It calms the nervous system through honest expression and surrenders to God. It reinforces trust. I know there are someone that we think we can trust that are not safe people anymore. If there’s no one to talk to physically, you will always have God by your side and He is ready to always hear from you.

REFLECTION CHECKPOINT: What do you need to confess? What do you need to share with God?

PRAY Action

Hi God! Thank you for the gifts of confession and prayer. It’s scary to name the things that have stressed us out, that have created anxiety and panic within us, and more. We try to manage it ourselves, but that creates a burden on its own. I know it’s not a burden for you to hear. I know you want to hear all these things because you care about all these things. Help us to be more open and honest with you. Guide us to people that we can trust and feel safe with to also share these concerns with. You didn’t create me to do life alone. You are always with me. And there are others that walk alongside me that you have put here to help me out. It’s in your name, we pray. Amen.
