Micah 7:18
NASB – Who is a God like You, who pardons wrongdoing And passes over a rebellious act of the remnant of His possession? He does not retain His anger forever, Because He delights in mercy.
NLT – Where is another God like you, who pardons the guilt of the remnant, overlooking the sins of his special people? You will not stay angry with your people forever, because you delight in showing unfailing love.
VOICE – Is there any other God like You, who forgives evil and passes over the transgressions done by Yours who remain? He does not hold onto His anger forever because He delights in showing love and kindness?
Understanding God’s Anger and Forgiveness
In the context of the ancient Near East, polytheism was very prominent. The mention of a “God like You” shows the monotheistic belief that YHWH is the one true God. It’s a reminder of God’s power and holiness, which sets Yahweh apart from the idols worshiped by other nations. Yahweh has a willingness to forgive our sins. God’s grace is sufficient enough to pardon even serious wrongdoing. For God to pass over our transgressions, shows God’s mercy is not punishing us as we deserve. Overall, Christians have often read this as anticipating the mercy fully revealed in Christ. God does this for those that remain close to God despite the issues the believers faced with polytheism.
God doesn’t stay angry forever because mercy is vital to God’s character.. His goal is to restore relationships with his covenant people after moments of discipline. God’s anger being temporary reassures us that God is ready to forgive and restore at the end of the day. How God interacts with us is a reminder of His mercy – the goal that, even when God is angry, the ultimate goal is that He guides us towards a place of forgiveness and reconciliation.

The Need for Repentance
Our response needs to be repentance. It’s us turning away from the behaviors that separate us from God, acknowledging our sorrow for committing these behaviors, asking for forgiveness for going against God’s will and command, and committing to behaviors that re-aligns our desires and minds to what God wants us to do. It’s difficult to acknowledge when we do things wrong, especially when it either feels right or recognizes that it’s not hurting anyone. Overall, believers need to recognize that the sinful behaviors, generally, hurt our relationship with God. We have to recognize and understand what God has called us to do in life, to see how we can live in accordance to God’s will. The more that we can study God’s word, understand how His commands can be lived out in our everyday life, and work to understand what is working in our lives and what is not working. Let us continue to try and be more godly each and every day.
