Psalm 18:32

NASB – The God who encircles me with strength, And makes my way blameless?

NLT – God arms me with strength and he makes my way perfect.

VOICE – The True God encircled me with strength and made my pathway straight.

God’s Path is Faithful and Secure

In the context of Psalm, David suggests that his military victories and personal confidences came from God’s power and strength. The imagery of God arming David suggests preparation for battle, much like how Paul describes that believers need to put on the full armor of God. The notion of God making the path forward clears suggests removing the obstacles and providing direction, to guide believers on a clear and strong path that God created for us. Historically, David faced many paths, both literal and metaphorical, that are filled with challenges. Using the imagery of “the path” to God, it’s connecting to see how Jesus is known as the “way” to God. The idea of God strengthening us for the road ahead can also be connected to the historical event of God creating a path to the Promised Land.

Staying Strong on the Path

When faced with uncertainties, we’re called to seek God’s guidance to navigate the paths in front of us. It’s easy to become so overwhelmed with the events that are going on in the world, that we go into isolation, protection, and fear. We try to control as much as a possible within our realm, but we truly cannot control everything. Our role is to tend to our responses, boundaries, and choices, and we can do that through our reliance on God’s strength. We work on being able to go out and control what we can – our reactions, our emotions, our intelligence, and our energy. We must remember that we are not responsible for the behaviors and actions of others, but we can control how we respond to them.

When we give those trials to God and allow the weight and the burden to come off of our shoulders and on to God’s, we start feel lighter and calmer. We also start to create a path to move forward in a place where we can see a faithful outcome. When we get that desired outcome, we start to rely more on who God is and how He got us there. The more we go through this cycle of relying and trusting in God’s strength and trust, the more comfortable this guess for us. It’s not the easiest path to stick with, but faithfulness does not always mean ease, but it does mean God presence.
