Isaiah 53:5

AMP – But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was crushed for our wickedness [our sin, our injustice, our wrongdoing]; The punishment [required] for our well-being fell on Him, And by His stripes (wounds) we are healed.

NRSVUE – But he was wounded for our transgressions, crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the punishment that made us whole, and by his bruises we are healed.

VOICE – But he was hurt because of us; he suffered so. Our wrongdoing wounded and crushed him. He endured the breaking that made us whole. The injuries he suffered became our healing.

The Suffering Servant’s Sacrifice

We’re talking about the concept of substitutionary atonement. Overall, there is a suffering servant that would take on the punishment that was meant for others. The word “transgressions” describes humanity’s deliberate sins or violations, which shows us why we needed the sacrifice of Christ (notice the usage of pierced – see John 19:34). The suffering servant was crushed, describing the intensity of the sacrifice. The word “iniquities” describes humanity’s moral corruption and wickedness. The punishment that the suffering servant endured represented the justice that was needed to atone for the sins of humanity. Through this we find peace – a wholeness, well-being, and reconciliation with God. The “stripes” describe the suffering servant’s wounds that happened through scourging (a form of punishment.) The healing described is both spiritual and physical, showing that we find a comprehensive salvation through this sacrifice.

REFLECTION CHECKPOINT: Jesus suffered the ultimate punishment in order to break our bondage with sin and have a reconciled relationship with God. What does that mean for you when you reflect on being a Christian?

The Sacrificial Love of Christ

Now, if you couldn’t tell, the suffering servant was/is Jesus. Let’s simplify what this verse is talking about. Jesus bore humanity’s sins, broken down into two areas. Transgressions – humanity’s deliberate sins or violations and iniquities – humanity’s moral corruption and wickedness. Typically the punishment for sinful behaviors is death. However, there was to be a substitutionary sacrifice to atone for the sins of the world. In the Old covenant, it would be through a sacrificial system. Now, we have one suffering servant. This servant would be punished on behalf of intensity. This servant was flogged, scourged, and crucified on our behalf. He would be punished intensely on our behalf so that we can can have a right and reconciled relationship with God.

Through this sacrifice, we receive peace from God. This peace comes through as a restored relationship with our Creator that transforms our lives. Now, this peace isn’t giving us an absence of chaos. It’s peace that knowing no matter what storms we face, what journeys we walk through, that we have a Lord and Savior ready to guide us, strengthen us, encourage us, and lead through to a place of victory. It’s going to look different person to person, for my journey is not your journey. However, we can come together in community, and talk about journeys. We learn more about who God is through our testimonies, and can work together to be His hands and feet throughout the world. Through community that God leads us into, we find healing. Granted, it’s not the divine healing that He provides and leads us towards, but it leads to community, relationship, and a brighter future. It creates paths towards friendships, romance, families, careers, and more. It creates a circle that can get wider (or smaller) depending on the season of life, but at the end – God is there, without stretched arms, at the center of everything I do and am.
