Welcome to Day 124 of the “Manna for the Mind” devotional! This series is about taking scripture passages (typically 1-3 verses) and building our understanding of their teachings through their context and connecting scripture. I believe that doing this helps us understand how to be the type of human that God created us to be.
Today’s passage is Psalm 25:14-15, where we’ll discuss what it means to be a friend of God.
Psalm 25:14-15
| AMP | NLT | VOICE |
| 14 The secret [of the wise counsel] of the Lord is for those who fear Him, And He will let them know His covenant and reveal to them [through His word] its [deep, inner] meaning. | 14 The Lord is a friend to those who fear him. He teaches them his covenant. | 14 ONLY those who stand in awe of the Eternal will have intimacy with Him, and He will reveal His covenant to them. |
| 15 My eyes are continually toward the Lord, For He will bring my feet out of the net. | 15 My eyes are continually toward the Lord, For He will bring my feet out of the net. | 15 Perpetually my focus takes me to the Eternal because He will set me free from the traps laid for me. |
God offers an intimate and lasting friendship to those who revere him and hold the highest honor. This friendship, unlike earthly relationships, is eternal and unwavering. Your everlasting friendship with God will grow as you respect and honor him. As Christians, we must respect the teachings God has given us. They can be hard to understand today because of the cultural differences between us (Americans) and the Jewish audience. However, the underlying foundations of those teachings are universal. The Word of God is the same yesterday, today, and tomorrow, which means we must dig into what that truth looks like and honor God with it. We must go out daily and live out those teachings respectfully towards each other in a way that honors and gives glory to God. One of those ways is through prayer.
Psalm 123:2
| AMP | NLT | VOICE |
| 2 Behold, as the eye or servants look to the hand of their master, And as the eyes of a maid to the hand of her mistress, So our eyes look the Lord our God, Until He is gracious and favorable toward us. | 2 We keep looking to the Lord our God for his mercy, just as servants keep their eyes on their master, as a slave girl watches her mistress for the slightest signal. | 2 Just as the eyes of servants closely watch the hand of their masters, Just as a maid carefully observes the slightest gesture of her mistress, In the same way we look to You, Eternal One, waiting for our God to pour out His mercy upon us. |
When we pray for mercy and favor from the Lord, he gives them to us. Prayer is our direct line to God, a powerful tool that connects us to his mercy and guidance. Watch out for those who reach out to you, verses that come to mind, and promptings from the Holy Spirit. Keep your eyes open for God’s responses to you. Ask God about what you need to be forgiven over. You will find verses that apply to your situation. You will hear from people that hurt you or that you need to apologize too. You will feel like doing things to heal your soul that you’d never dream of doing. You will find things going right for you in a way that you wouldn’t expect. You will find success when it feels like it should be chaos. God’s blessings are yes and amen and found when we experience a relationship with him.
Heavenly Father, we thank you for the eternal friendship you offer us. While earthly relationships may come and go, our relationship with you is everlasting. We pray that you help us strengthen this relationship, making it the foundation for all our other relationships. In your name, we pray. Amen.
