Measure of Faith || Romans 12:3 || Manna for the Mind #232

Romans 12:3

NASBNLTVOICE
3 For through the grace given to me I say to everyone among you not to think more highly of himself than he ought to think; but to think so as to have sound judgment, as God has allotted to each a measure of faith.3 Because of the privilege and authority God has given me, I give each of you this warning: Don’t think you are better than you really are. Be honest in your evaluation of yourselves, measuring yourselves by the faith God has given us.3 Because of the grace allotted to me, I can respectfully tell you not to think of yourselves as being more important than you are; devote your minds to sound judgment since God has assigned to each of us a measure of faith.

Paul starts by acknowledging the grace that was given to him. This grace is a divine enablement for his ministry, showing that his teaching and message is not from a personal agenda but from God’s favor. The concept of God’s grace is the foundation to Paul’s theology, sharing God’s unmerited favor and the empowerment for service. Paul is addressing all believers in the Roman church (a universal greeting). This inclusiveness shows that the nature of the church is a diverse body of believers. This global message transcends the cultural and ethnic boundaries at the time because the Roman church was composed both of Jewish and Gentile believers.

Paul warns against pride. Biblical teachings for humanity warn that pride precedes destruction and the Christians need to live a life of humility. In the cultural context of Rome, this teaching challenged believers to adapt to this countercultural mindset. Rome highly valued social status and honor. Paul wants to see people take a balanced and realistic self-assessment. To use clarity and self-control and avoid pride and false humility. Paul introduces the concept of “measure of faith.” It suggests that God apportions faith to each believer for their role and function within the greater church body of Christ. It implies that believers should work within the sphere of faith God granted them. This measure is not a means of comparison, but a personal achievement and blessing for fulfilling God’s purposes.

Grace and faith are gifts from God. These are not earned, but given, and they empower us to serve in the body of Christ. We often are taught and believe that we must work hard, keep the laws, and stay obedient in order to receive the blessing of God. God gifts it to those that acknowledge and want to receive it. God created each of us to have a place in this world and work towards bringing the Kingdom of God down to earth. We all are given different skills, talents, and resources for our life. We need to ensure that we use these things to meet the needs of our community, speak up and out for the voiceless and marginalized, and work to ensure that people of all different background, lifestyles, ethnicities, and more have an equal right to life that all of God’s creation deserve.
