Scripture: Deuteronomy 6:6
These words, which I am commanding you today, shall be [written] on your heart and mind.
Midrash
I’m writing this reflection on New Year’s Day. This is a reminder to me to keep God’s word close to me, both in my heart and mind. When we talk about scripture and God, it makes me think of why to keep it close to our heart, mind, soul, and strength. Why the heart? Well, I believe it comes from the emotional side of our personality. If we keep God’s word close to us, we can use it to help manage our emotions carefully and methodically. We don’t have to act irrational or on impulse, but we can give our emotions to God, and he can help us react in a Christ-like manner. Why the mind? Well, I believe this comes from the intellectual side of our personality. We often act based on what we know and remember, but God tells us not to lean on our own understanding but instead rely on his movement and word to guide our actions. As we walk through 2022, may we keep God’s word close to our hearts and in our minds.
