“Over and Over” by Riley Clemmons || Worship With Me #25

Welcome back to my latest music review series, “Worship with Me.” This series introduces you to new worship music that you might have heard before. I aim to connect with you through worship and build your relationship with God in ways you might not have tried.

The song we’re diving into this week is “Over and Over” by Riley Clemmons. I don’t quite remember how I got into her music, but I believe I heard her piano version of “Fighting for Me” and went down the rabbit trail. She’s excellent at combining emotion with melody, sharing the words correctly, and allowing you to listen to the song through multiple senses. I’d also recommend “Better For It,” “Healing,” and “Headspace” if you get stuck on the rabbit trail like I did.

In an interview with Capital CMG Label Group, she states that this song is a reminder of God’s promises for us. Let’s talk about that message because she expressed it beautifully in her lyrics. Listen to it in the chorus:

But somehow You choose me

Over and over again

Over and over again

You keep running to me

No matter where I am

Over and over again

I get lost I must confess

Oh how quickly I forget

But you keep on showing me I’m loved

Over and over again

There’s some context missing from the opening verses, but the point remains. God chooses us consistently. Whether it be to love us, give us salvation, or share in his mercy and grace, God chooses us to share that with. God never leaves us, either. God will run to you, even if you’re running away from him. God walks us through our struggles. It’s easy to get sucked into the mundane, the anxiety, and the chaos, but we have this reminder that God is always with us. It’s easy to get lost in the overwhelmingness of our lives, where so many things are grasping for our attention. The world has made it to where it takes work to keep our focus on one thing over a long time. Yet, there are always reminders of God’s love in many different capacities.

God has shown me many second chances throughout my life, so I resonate with the words in verse two:

God of second chances here to catch me every time

I thought I was unlovable till You told this heart of mine

I’m worth more than my past mistakes

I’m never too far gone to save

I’ve given You every good reason to walk away.

What I went through in 2023 had me reciting the opposite of the last three lines. My mistakes are my identity. I will always be a screw-up. God will never want to use me after what I’ve done. My mistakes haunted me for a good year and still exist today. Yet, I’ve learned that my mistakes do not define me. My mistakes showed me areas of growth, weaknesses, and where I needed God’s guidance more than ever. As of writing this, I recently learned that my mistakes may not even haunt me like I was warned they would. My value can be shown through my talents, heart, compassion, and other traits that lend me to be more Christ-like. God sees me beyond my mistakes and still chooses me to do work in his Kingdom. God sees me beyond what I’ve done and still gives me the gift of salvation. God still calls me back home. God loves me and will continue to love me over and over again.
