Welcome back to my latest music review series, “Worship with Me.” This series introduces you to new worship music that you might have heard before. I aim to connect with you through worship and build your relationship with God in ways you might not have tried.
Today’s song is fresh off the charts when writing this. It’s “People Like Us” by Micah Tyler featuring Emerson Day. Like artists like Danny Gokey and Tauren Wells, I have followed Micah Tyler. I encountered him while perusing one of the “Christian Artists” playlists on Spotify. I heard the song “Never Been a Moment” and fell in love. That song was my anthem and my fixation for a long while. Ever since then, he’s put out some good bangers like “Walking Free,” “Mercy,” “Praise the Lord,” and more. His vibe is energetic, uplifting, positive, and connective all at the same time. He can hit you with the praise energy and the prayer chorus all at once with his repertoire.
In an article he did with Abby Carpenter from freeccm.com, he says this about the song. “My new song ‘People Like Us’ is a reminder that it don’t matter where you are or who you’ve been. If you have forgotten let me tell you once again that God loves people just like you & just like me.” He describes meeting people struggling with fear, loneliness, and worry, trying to cling to God’s promises. (Quoted and paraphased from this article: https://freeccm.com/2024/03/06/behind-the-song-micah-tyler-shares-the-heart-behind-his-song-people-like-us-feat-emerson-day/)
The song is the perfect reminder for all of us. No matter who we are, what we’ve done, what we’re going through, or what we’re doing, God loves us all and wants the best for all of us. Let me share with you some of my favorite lyrics:
God loves people like you
Cause God loves people like me
A lost and hopeless sinner
That mercy has redeemed
And if you feel like He don’t
The cross is proof that He does
Praise the Lord
Oh hallelujah that God loves
God loves people like us
Oh yes
God loves people like us
We’ve all struggled with a lost and hopeless time in our lives. These moments are happening more and more with each new generation. Yet God loves us in the middle of those struggles. He did not cause them. The world and its ever-progressing capitalistic, on-the-go, always-producing mindset are significant chunks of that problem. Yet God still loves us all, flaws and everything. Jesus was sent to die on the cross in our place. It’s hard to imagine what that truly means when we don’t see, engage with, or participate in crucifixion punishments in our culture today, so it feels weird, unusual, and even uncomfortable. Jesus received the death penalty, in essence. Jesus was willing to spend his life in prison until his death to prevent us from having to serve that sentence. That’s love. How many of you would be willing to serve a life sentence for people you don’t know and have never met before. That’s what Jesus did. God loved us so much that he sent his only son to serve that sentence for us, which had to be heartbreaking to him to resort to that so that we could have a bold, confident, and loving relationship with each other.
Listen to the bridge to get some reminders, mantras, and affirmations to take away:
Every second of our lives
We are precious in His sight
We are children to a Father
Gave His own to give us life
It don’t matter where you are
It don’t matter where you’ve been
Oh and if you have forgotten
Let me tell you once again
God loves us every second of our lives (typically 2,251,670,400 based on the average human life). From the moment we’re conceived to the moment we’re crossing the heavenly realm, God adores his creation. We are precious to him, like diamonds to a jeweler, like a jersey to a sports fan. We are children to an almighty Father who sent his own son, his own flesh and blood, to die for us so we can be in a close relationship with our heavenly Father. We might not have a healthy or close relationship with our earthly father. We might not have any relationship with him. My heart breaks for you if you’re feeling the pain, grief, and frustration. I hope you can find healing and forgiveness. I hope you recognize that while your earthly father has failed you, you have a heavenly Father waiting for you with open arms. It doesn’t matter where you are or where you’ve been; God is ready to welcome you into the family.
Let me know what you think of the song below, and leave any recommendations for songs you’d like me to discuss. I’ll be back next week with another worship moment. Until then, stay blessed!
