Exodus 8:2-4
2 If you refuse to let them go, behold, I will plague all your border with frogs.
3 The river will swarm with frogs, which will go up and come into your house, and into your bedroom, and on your bed, and into the hose of your servants, and on your people, and into your ovens, and into your kneading troughs.
4 The frogs shall come up both on you, and on your people, and on all your servants.”’”
Plague #2: Frog Invasion
The second of the plagues is the invasion of frogs on all parts of Egypt. They show up everywhere, and I mean – EVERYWHERE, as you can see in verse 3. This is following the water source turning into blood. The frogs have nowhere to go, or else they’d die, right? Do the frogs represent something else? Let’s talk about that.
REFLECTION CHECKPOINT: What do you believe the frogs represent?
Frogs Invade the Land
We see the struggles between God and Pharaoh yet again. God is demanding the Israelites be released from slavery immediately. Since Pharaoh’s heart is hardened still, God sends the second plague – frogs. Frogs were common in this region – but the overwhelming numbers of them would have both a nuisance and a divine intervention. In the Egyptian culture, frogs were a symbol of life and fertility. This plague not only would have caused physical discomfort but also challenged the Egyptian religious system. It shows how powerless their gods were when compared to Yahweh.
REFLECTION CHECKPOINT: Frogs were a plague of fertility. One could assume that it would be the fertility of the land. Hearing this information, how do you imagine the frogs impacting the Egyptians life?
Seeing Through the Fake Spiritual Sources
We’re starting to see the true spiritual warfare happening between the God of liberation and Egypt’s oppressive gods and empire. It’s a battle of what is true long-term versus what appears true for the short-term. It’s a reminder for us to recognize and avoid spiritual deception. Our society has been overwhelmed by people pushing their “get-rich-quick” schemes, healthcare hacks, beauty products, and more. Everything that pushes a “cure-all” for problems that we believe we have, but that their marketing says we have. We, as humans, are insecure people. We’ll question ourselves, our morals, our needs, and more. We’ll try to bandage things in the short-term because we are taught to fix it quick as possible so we can be back in the “normal” flow of society quicker. However, we’re brainwashed of this.
God offers a lot of different mental restoration efforts to help us cope with our anxieties, depression, frustrations, and more. He also provides us with different resources in our world that can help us with these options. It’s tough to figure out what option to choose. We can get massive analysis paralysis in choosing what options are best for us. That’s when we must trust God. Trust in His guidance to lead us in the right path to the source. Trust in His time to get you there when you truly need. It may not be as fast as the world would encourage, but God’s time is greater than all. Trust in His strength to help you cope during the trial so that you can continue forward with the mission that God has for you
REFLECTION CHECKPOINT: In times of challenges that you’ve faced, how have you leaned on God to help get you through?
Frogs, Frogs, Everywhere
The abundance of frogs, which is a sign of the Nile’s life, actually becomes a curse. The frogs will invade the palace of the Pharaoh, showing that God’s judgment will reach even the highest earthly authority. They will invade places like the bedroom, showing that God’s judgment can lead to the loss of comfort and privacy. They will hit Pharaoh’s officials and community, showing that even our leader’s opposition to God’s command can affect us. They will affect our daily life and sustenance.
REFLECTION CHECKPOINT: How have you seen the actions of others affect your life, either intentionally or unintentionally?
The Dollar-Store Idol
The plagues are targeting the Egyptian deities, showing that idolatry is not the answer. We are called to look that our modern-day idols that can interrupt our relationship with God. The world has seen these idols to be things like Christian nationalism, consumerism, or militarism. They can also often be our relationships that get in the way are our presence on social media, any addictions that we have, our focus on money or our career, and more. These are things that we can get so wrapped up in forget God in the process. We get so wrapped up at trying to do things ourselves, trying to take care of things ourselves, and do what we think is right instead of doing what is right in God’s eyes. When we recognize these things, we can remove the emotional impact they have for us and start to replace them in what God has for us. Now, some of our suffering comes from systems that weren’t built for us and as a side-effect of the choices of others. In those situations, it’ll be learning how we can overcome those hardships through the strength of God.
