Introduction

Welcome to another part of “Let’s Listen To.” If you haven’t heard of this blog series before, it’s a series where I take some of my favorite Christian songs and recommend them to you in a compelling way. I usually take you behind the scenes of the song to hear from the artist why this song exists. I also will take one or two verses and break them down to talk about what they mean to me. I have eleven other song blogs on this site if you want to check them out.

This week, we’re looking at the song “Yes I Will” by Vertical Worship. I have to admit something. Worship teams from these more prominent churches, like Elevation Church, Life.Church, etc. I didn’t really care for them early on. Their worship music styling was very repetitive, dull, and boring. I listened to “My Testimony” by Elevation Worship at the start of the pandemic, and that’s when I really dove into their music. Other worship teams and God changed my heart. I grew to love it in all of its glory. So without further ado, let’s dive into it.

Behind the Song

I should introduce who Vertical Worship is. They are a worship team from Chicago, Illinois, as part of the Harvest Bible Church. The team’s current worship leaders are Andi Rozier, Lauren Smith, Jon Guerra, Tara Cruz, Jake France, Judd Harris, and Kyle Smith. The rest of the band includes Robert Titean, James Herlo, and Zac Moore. 

In an article they did with freeccm.com (link at the end of the blog), they shared the story behind this song. I will summarize what they had to say here, but I encourage you to check out the article for yourself. They lead off this story with a line from Psalm 34: “I will bless the Lord at all times. His praise will continually be in my mouth.” They mention that we often choose not to praise God when we’re in challenging situations. They mention how our hearts will ensure that God isn’t good, and our brains will lead us to think that the Bible’s promises are false. Our emotions get in the way. When this happens to us, they say this: …we have to choose whether we’re in the valley or on the mountaintop where our sight is not so fixed when we can’t really make out what’s happening up ahead. They mentioned that we have to move out of the way and decide that we need to praise. 

It’s a great message to this song. To say that the world hasn’t treated me right, God must be working against me, and what he promises will never come true. Instead of focusing on this rough season, I will intentionally push that aside and make a choice to praise God. I love it! Let’s talk about a couple of the verses.

What’s This Mean? – Lyric #1

Let’s check out what the main verse says:

“I count on one thing

The same God that never fails

Will not fail me now

You won’t fail me now

In the waiting 

The same God who’s never late

Is working all things out

Is working all things out.”

It leads off with the reminder that our God never fails us. God goes with us everywhere, through everything we do, no matter the circumstance. God is with us through our highs and lows, and because our God got through our previous low seasons, He will also get us through this season. We need to be patient. In our waiting to traverse through this dark valley, God takes us through this in his timing. In our lowest valleys, we tend to see our struggles and weaknesses. The Bible says that our God will turn our weaknesses into strengths. So our time in the dark valley may suck and probably does suck. Our God is working all of this out for us. All we need is just a few things: faith and trust. We must believe God will lead us out of this valley stronger than before. We need to trust our God to guide us on the proper path and lead us to the things we need to survive. 

What’s This Mean – Lyric #2

Let’s check out the chorus now:

“Yes I will, lift You high in the lowest valley

Yes I will, bless Your name

Oh, yes I will, sing for joy when my heart is heavy

All my days, oh yes I will.”

This is our anthem. This needs to be our reminder day in and day out when we feel so burdened with our emotions, thoughts, feelings, experiences, etc. This reminder is that no matter what, we will praise our God for the good things he still does, has done, and will do in our lives. When we feel bogged down that it’s hard to think about the good things in our lives, but it can be done. Even the most straightforward thought of: “Thank you, God, for my first breath.” or “Thank you God for this roof over my head.” Something like that can remind us that our God is still good, that our God is still with us, and that our God is still for us. We know God didn’t cause this valley we’re going through but will walk alongside us and guide us through and out of the valley. May that be your reminder throughout the week and each time you hear this song.

Summary and Preview

This is just a one-off blog. I wanted us to take a breather after our previous series to relax and praise God. I plan on doing these throughout the year as an in-between series between blog series.
