Welcome back to another chapter in our “Let’s Listen To” series! If you’re new to this, I welcome you! This series is about sharing some of my favorite contemporary Christian tracks. I talk about anything from the artist’s explanation of the song’s meaning, how I connected with the song, and some of my favorite verses.

Today, we’re discussing “Your Name is Power” by Rend Collective. I don’t remember when I first heard this song or took a liking to it. This song came across my feed as I built my Christian music playlist. It was a bop and stuck in my playlist. This song came out in 2020 as part of their album called “Choose to Worship.”

This song is, as adequately titled, about the power of God’s name. Naming that God’s name is both powerful and faithful. It’s good to remember to call on God’s name in times of trouble and excitement. We often only call on God when life isn’t good, but we should also call on God when life is going well. Let’s talk about that.

According to an article from ccmmagazine.com, Rend Collective says this song was “born out of a need to remind ourselves who is in control.” The band claims this: “There is power in the name of Jesus for his people to claim – that means you and I. Power to strengthen and encourage us. The power that only comes from Him.” There will be a link to the full article at the end of this blog.

Control is something that I wouldn’t have linked to this song, but yet I understand it at the same time. When calling out to God, it’s because something happened outside of our control. As a control freak, I resonate with that. We often call to God, claiming: “God, why’d you do that?” or “God, how come that happened to me?” This call-out could be about good or bad reasons, but at the same time, things happen outside of our control. Regardless, there’s still a God we can run to find the power needed to go through rough patches or find the faith to continue trusting God.

Let’s talk about some of my favorite verses:

Your name is power over darkness

Freedom for the captives

Mercy for the broken and the hopeless

Your name is faithful in the battle

Glory in the struggle

Mighty, it won’t let us down or fail us

Power over darkness. God’s name has the power to push away the darkness. It’s why Jesus was known as the light to the world and calls us to share that same light. God’s name frees us from the captivity of our sins. We aren’t in bondage to our sins. We are set free from our sinful nature through the sacrifice of Jesus. God’s name is merciful to us. When we’re broken and left without hope, God’s name is there for us to call to give us hope and courage to continue forward.

Faith is victorious. Faith is what we hope for, the evidence of things not seen. (Hebrews 11:1) We can hope for anything we want in life. If it’s a part of God’s plan, we trust that God will see it through, then our faith can come out on top. Finding glory in the struggle is something we don’t often do. We don’t celebrate God when we’re struggling, yet God calls us to do that. God calls us to have a grateful mind at all times, so what would it mean to share gratitude in times of struggle? It’s something to reflect on later (which I have in other blogs). God’s name is mighty. God won’t let us down or fail us. What happens when we’re feeling let down, then? What happens when we feel like we failed? It may be a failure to us, but it may be God closing the door for you to do something else in his path.

Please check out this song. I have a playlist on my blog that includes all the songs from the “Let’s Listen To” series where this will be. Check it out and let me know what you think of it. Stay tuned for next week’s new series about the Armor of God! Until then, stay blessed!
