Welcome back to another installment of “Let’s Listen To…” This series is about sharing some of my favorite songs from the CCM world. This week we are reviewing the song “Faith” by Jordan Feliz. Let’s dive into the meaning of the song first and foremost.
In an article from The Fish in Portland (link at the end of the blog), Jordan says this song comes from his life story. God pushed him to move to Nashville, but it wasn’t an easy journey. He couldn’t get a job, he and his wife were sharing one car, he couldn’t get people to write songs with him, and they found out they were pregnant. So much going on. Then things fell into place! He signed to a label, they won a brand new car, his daughter was born shortly after that, and his first single went out. Listen to how he sums everything up: “After so much difficulty and uncertainty, God answered our prayers. He is there for all of us, and all we have to do is remain faithful.” After this explanation, let’s dive right into the lyrics.
Let’s dive right into the chorus:
It’s light for the shadows, for all your tomorrows.
It’s knowing He’s there through the sun and the rain.
It’s when you believe it, before you can see it.
And you can walk on ’cause he’s making the way.
What a way to define faith, right? Faith is light for the shadows. Faith is for all your tomorrows. It’s our reminder that our faith can shine brighter than all the dark times we will walk through. Faith can keep us hopeful for a brighter future. Faith can light our path to walk through the valley. Faith is about knowing that God’s there through the good and the bad. Faith is keeping hope in something before it even happens. Based on his explanation of the song, faith ensures you can take care of your family while fulfilling God’s plan. The chorus makes me feel like I can understand what faith is, even when my faith feels weak or nonexistent. Honestly, even looking through the rest of the lyrics, this song defines faith. Parts of these verses almost feel like a prayer.
Listen to the start of the 2nd verse:
Searching for purpose, you know the way then
Praying through so many silent hours
Finding a breath when you feel like fainting
Loving the lover you are right now.
I read this and think of Jordan praying to God: “God, what’s my purpose? I’ve been trying to find it and am lost. I know you know the way. I’m tired of searching. I have no energy to continue fighting this fight. Lord, shield me from the stress. Would you please help me find how I know you do that so well?” Do you know what I mean? I know that felt all over the place, but what prayer doesn’t. I’ll keep the faith that you understand and that you’ll come back next week to start our brand-new series! Until then, stay blessed!
