Matthew 5:14, 16
| NASB | NLT | VOICE |
| 14 You are the light of the world. A city set on a hall cannot be hidden; | 14 “You are the light of the world – like a city on a hilltop that cannot be hidden. | 14 And you, beloved, are the light of the world. A city built on a hilltop cannot be hidden. |
| 16 Your light must shine before people in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven. | 16 In the same way, let your good deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father. | 16 You are like that illuminating light. Let your light shine everywhere you go, that you may illumine creation, so men and women everywhere may see your good actions, may see creation at its fullest, may see your devotion to Me, and may turn and praise your Father in heaven because of it. |
What It Means to Be Light
In the biblical context, light symbolizes truth, purity, and divine revelation. Jesus is described as the “light of the world” (John 8:12), which shows that His followers are called to reflect HIs light. The call implies a responsibility to live in a way that reveals God’s truth and love to others. It’s a way to influence your community positively and guide others to Christ. In the historical and geographical context, cities in ancient Israel were often built on high ground for defense purposes, making them visible from a distance. The lives of the believers should be impactful, much like having the city standing out in the landscape. Believers are called to live in such a way that their faith and action cannot be concealed, serving as a beacon of hope and righteousness in the world.
Living Faith That Can’t Be Hidden
The call to be light carries the responsibility to live out the values of the Kingdom, serving as a witness to the transformative power of the Gospel. I firmly believe that our actions speak heavier than any words that we could say. It’s easy for us to preach and share the Gospel story and teaching of God to anyone that was willing to hear it or not. It’s harder for us to live out those teachings to our community. Reflecting Christ’s light means reflecting His character – His love, grace, mercy, and truth. It could be his love, his grace, his mercy, his compassion – whatever He’s given you, live it out. God provides us these gifts, the fruit of the spirit, and more. How we live them will show others the true reflection of who God is and can see the truth behind the Bible, and not the often angry, bible-thumping, condemning teaching that most conservative Christians go with.
Good Deeds that Illuminate God’s Love
Just as a lamp is placed on a stand to give light to everyone in the house, so should the believer’s life be a visible testimony to others. In a cultural context, light was essential for safety and guidance, especially in a cultural context where darkness was associated with danger and evil. Believers should live openly and authentically demonstrating their faith in a way that is visible to others. The “good deeds” refer to the acts of kindness, charity, and righteousness that are a natural outflow of a transformed life in Christ. In the historical context of first-century Judaism, good deeds connected to following the Law. Jesus reshapes this mindset as these acts connect to having a heart for God’s will. The ultimate purpose of having our light shine and doing these good things is to bring God glory.
Let It Start at Home
By living out our faith authentically, we become instruments through which God can draw others to Himself. As I mentioned above, we can often share God with others better through what we do as what we say. So far, we’ve talked about this from the individual perspectivel, but the church can improve on this as well. I’ve struggled with mission work in the church – not because I’m able to start anything, but because we often oversee the need in our own community. What I mean is that it’s easy to want to help people in third world countries, and we should, but we should also look to help our community too. I believe in the butterfly effect – we help our community, so they can help out the city, help out the country, and then help out the world. We must work to see how we can help out our fellow neighbors, and help our world. The light can grow from the source and extend from the world
