Romans 14:8
| NASB | NLT | VOICE |
| 8 for if we live, we live for the Lord, or if we die, we die for the Lord; therefore whether we live or die, we are the Lord’s. | 8 If we live, it’s to honor the Lord. And if we die, it’s to honor the Lord. So whether we live or die, we belong to the Lord. | 8 For if we live, we live for the Lord. If we die, we die for the Lord. So in both life and death, we belong to the Lord. |
A Life (and Death) with Purpose
The concept of living to the Lord reflects the concept that we live under God’s authority for His purposes. The culture of the early church viewed this as a radical way of life. We are to view our life as a gift from God that is to be used for His glory. The concept of dying to the Lord was profound. It reflects the power of God over life and death. Belonging to God in death provides hope to believers, solidifying our path to eternal life. All of this is rooted in the relationship between God and His people. This comes to fruition through Jesus, who redeems and claims believers as his own.
When Life Feels Too Small … or Too Big
Keeping the bigger picture of our eternal life as our focus has been helpful to me with the challenges I face in life. It feels odd to name it that way, but it’s true. It’s helped in two ways:
- Recognize that my problems are small and inconsequential in comparison to God.
- Recognize that my problems are never too big for God to handle.
Everyday Obedience Matters
God is ready and waiting to hear all about your problems, whether it’s failing a math test or feeling like a failure to your mother. God wants to hear about everything that is weighing heavy on your shoulders. I recognize that my role in life is to do what God’s called me to do. Currently, I believe that God wants me to help people to the best of my capabilities. It’s through our blog community here, my job as a life insurance underwriter, or my job as a tax preparer. God has placed me in places to be able to offer either a service, a resource, or an ear. Some people I’ve talked with never do business with me – but always sit and chat for an hour. Why? I’m not sure. What I do know is – you will never know who you cross paths with. You will never know if the person you meet will be your friend or your murderer (bold statement, I know, but stick with me). The idea is no matter what you do in life or who you run into, be sure you are faithfully representing God in everything you say and do, even if it leads to your death. There will be a place for you in heaven.
Reflection Questions
- In what way are you currently living for God?
- How do you remind yourself that God is the owner of your life?
- Who in your life might need to experience God’s love through your daily faithfulness?
