Psalm 51:10

AMP – Create in me a clean heart, O God, And renew a right and steadfast spirit within me.

VOICE – Create in me a clean heart, O God; restore within me a sense of being brand new.

The Source of a Clean Heart

David shares that sin corrupts the inner person and that cleansing must come from God alone. For context, David is wrestling with the incident of adultery of Bathsheba and the murder of Uriah (see 2 Samuel 11). David is not making excuses for his actions or looking short-term relief. David wants to wrestle with his source of rebellion. A clean heart involves forgiven guilt, restored devotion, and a renewed desire to obey God. God promised to give His people a new heart and a new spirit. We can find this today through the acknowledge of Christ’s atoning sacrifice in our life and how we can apply that atonement and cleansing to our life.

David wants inner stability after his unstable and deceitful decisions led to his sin. He wants a spirit that is directed towards God – focused on resisting temptation and staying strong in obeying God’s commands. Forgiveness doesn’t leave us unchanged. God restores our relationship with Him and strengths our souls, minds, body, and strength so that we can serve God faithfully.

What is a Clean Heart?

This leads me to look deeper at what a clean heart is. Clean describes a state of purity of all times that is necessary for worship and relationship with God. In our Psalm 51:10 context, we see that the his “clean” heart is a state of being aligned with God’s holiness, that is how set apart we are from the world to represent God. The heart was believed the core of who we are, encompassing the physical, emotional, intellectual, and spiritual parts of our being. In our Psalm 51:10 context, we want our hearts pure and aligned with God’s will. The heart is the seat of our consciousness, in a biblical mindset. It’s believed to be naturally wicked and contaminated our words, thoughts, and actions. Our hearts are called to be clean of the worldly desires and transformed into God’s alignment.

David’s goal of seeking a clean heart was necessary to attack the source of his rebellion. A clean heart allows him to find forgiveness of the guilt that was attacking him over his decisions with Bathsheba and Uriah. Guilt from our past will affect our decisions on how we progress forward. We will get stuck because of fear, potential judgment, and discomfort. Instead of working through these things, we will find ourselves staying where we are because it feels safe to us. A clean heart would restore our relationship with God. David may have felt far from God because of the severity of his sin. We may feel far from God because of our sin and how magnified we can get on it. God forgives us, and then forgets it. There’s no magnification on it, but there’s the goal of moving forward. God wants us to take the next best step to move in the next direction. As we do that, we’ll face the discomfort as mentioned earlier, but we have a Guide, Healer, and Father walking alongside to help us keep looking forward, instead of looking down and looking back. We look ahead, learning the information that we gained through our stress and our trials, and apply those lessons to God’s commands. We ground ourselves in how we can love God and love our neighbor to the best of our ability, and reflect God’s love, compassion, and mercy to all people that we meet.

New Heart and New Spirit

Let’s actually move back to Ezekiel 36:26 to see what this new heart and spirit can look like for us:

Ezekiel 36:26 A new heart I will give you, and I new spirit I will put within you, and I will remove from your body the heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh.

God promised an inward renewal that would come from the restoration from exile and cleansing from idolatry. The heart looks at our desires, loyalties, and choices. God will create a new mindset marked by faith, obedience, and our relationship to Him. The rebellion from the ancient Jewish people brought judgment and exile to them, but God would never abandon them. The power of the Holy Spirit gives us power to stay obedient and relational with God.

The ancient Jewish people displayed their resistance to God’s will through idolatry, injustice, and rejection of His commands. God would replace this resistance with a living, responsive heart capable of hearing and obeying God. God’s salvation doesn’t just change our behavior, but it renews the inner person for a relationship with Christ.

Our goal is to have a changed heart through our relationship with Christ. Our desires should align with loving our neighbor, standing up for the marginalized, providing healing resources and paths for the sick, welcome the stranger and the immigrants, caring for the environment, and more. Our loyalty should stay with our heavenly father, no matter how tempting the worldly entities can be. Our decisions are based on God’s will. Are they based on love? Are they based on justice/ Are they based on forgiveness? These decisions are ones God made for us, for he loved us some much that He did not want us to face a just punishment of the world. So he sent His son to the world, so that our sins can be forgiven. We can be atoned for, cleansed, and transformed into a pure reflection into this world.
