Scripture – Romans 6:22-23

But now that you’ve found you don’t have to listen to sin tell you what to do, and have discovered the delight of listening to God telling you, what a surprise! A whole, healed, put-together life right now, with more and more of life on the way! Work hard for sin your whole life and your pension is death. But God’s gift is real life, eternal life, delivered by Jesus, our Master.

Midrash

Simple focus on this passage: sinful living vs. godly living. Paul says that we don’t have to listen to sin. We don’t have to listen to what the world is telling us to do. We’ve learned about life and the plan God calls us to and implores us to follow that. Godly living is a life that’s complete, healed, and put together with more on the way. At face value, this sounds too good to be accurate, but that’s God. A lot of what God offers us is too good to be true. Remember, this isn’t saying that we shouldn’t listen to our elders or those in authority over us or ignore all rules and go into chaos. This is saying that values that the world provides us, that social media shows us to in a 21st-century connection, is something we no longer have to submit to. We can remove ourselves from this and instead submit ourselves to the life that God wants for us. A life where we follow His values and rules. Rules like: “Love God with all your being,” and “Love your neighbor as yourself.” A life where we don’t have to submit to standards that society pressures us with, but instead, we can come to God as we are…flaws and all. May you reflect on what it means for you and how you can make changes that you may not have known you needed to make.
