Scripture – Romans 5:6-8
Christ arrives right on time to make this happen. He didn’t, and doesn’t, wait for us to get ready. He presented himself for this sacrificial death when we were far too weak and rebellious to do anything to get ourselves ready. And even if we hadn’t been so weak, we wouldn’t have known what to do anyway. We can understand someone dying for a person worth dying for, and we can understand how someone good and noble could inspire us to selfless sacrifice. But God put his love on the line for us by offering his Son in sacrificial death while we were of no use whatever to him.
Midrash
We hear that God’s plan is always right on time, right? That God doesn’t want us to get in front of him or lag behind him but instead work right alongside him. Like, Christ showed himself that he was the Messiah to be sacrificed on behalf of us. None of us were ready for that. None of the disciples were ready for that. I mean, they were sitting and eating dinner when they heard about Christ’s plan. I wouldn’t be ready for that news to drop at dinner. I agree with Paul when he says that we wouldn’t know what to do even if we were ready. I believe that there’s no preparation available to learn that one of my closest friends would die for me. We can understand it and try to connect with it, but we will never know its true meaning or what it feels to make that sacrifice. God does through. God played his hand by offering his own Son as the sacrifice. I pray that you remember what Christ did for you. Amen.
