Welcome back to another chapter in our “Let’s Listen To” series! If you’re new to this, I welcome you! This series is about sharing some of my favorite contemporary Christian tracks. I talk about anything from the artist’s explanation of the song’s meaning, how I connected with the song, and some of my favorite verses.
Today’s song is “Prize Worth Fighting For” by Jamie Kimmett. This song was released in 2019 found on his self-titled EP. This song helped frame the niche type of music I favor in this season of my life. It’s calm but bouncy. It’s laid-back but has a fun energy to it. It’s a chill acoustic vibe that has developed one of my favorite types of music.
This song reclaims my faith during the points where it feels absent. God is greater than the intensity and the feelings of any suffering I can suffer. It’s my reminder to go forward no matter how intense my anxiety, depression, or hopelessness are. I’ll talk more about this when we take apart the lyrics.
According to an article on 365daysofinspiringmedia.com, Jamie says this song is about “holding on to your faith no matter what because we have a hope that is bigger than our circumstances and God is worth the suffering we experience.” He also shares his story about how he was ready to give up and that this song encouraged him to keep going.
My views of this song align perfectly with what he says that the song is about. He did a great job conveying the message because the wording is powerful. Let’s talk about some of my favorite lyrics.
Lately, been down so low
My faith seems to come and go
Some days, Father, I don’t know
How did my love grow cold?
How many of you have been here before? Stuck in this pit of depression that it permeates through what you say and do. Knowing that your faith can pull you out of it while also not believing that faith will help you out of it. The uncertainty of how you got that way and that there’s no way for you to return to “normal.” It’s relational and connectional, and it’s a prominent mindset. Many people today have feelings that are like or closely related to this first verse. How does he say we can overcome this? We can overcome this by leaning into Jesus. The teachings of Jesus can give us a new perspective on our problems, and we have a friend to talk about to gain that. We need to pray. Pray and press on. It’s giving our problems to God and then walking away knowing God will help no matter what. With all this in mind, hear the words of the second verse.
The battle rages on
But Your promise keeps me strong
I know I’ll win this race.
With Your unfailing grace.
With everything we’ve talked about, look at the change of mindset. The person in the song is no longer contemplating the downtrodden mindset but acknowledging the battles he’s wrestling with or could be wrestling with, recognizing the victory over it. He’s attacking the battle with the end in mind, which with Jesus means victory. How will the battle be victorious? Through God’s unfailing grace. Grace is God’s crazy love for us. A love that we don’t deserve but cannot get rid of. No matter what, we will always have a loving friend in Jesus walking alongside us in our journey through life. This song is a primary reminder that the relationship with Jesus is crucial in life. I want to end this blog with the last verse of this song because this is a beautiful reminder to keep in your brain every day. Stay tuned for whatever blog comes next. Until then, stay blessed!
Every day is just another struggle
Every choice is an act of war
I gotta pray, gotta pray
I gotta pray, gotta press on
To the prize worth fighting for
