For February’s Song Breakdown, I wanted to add what I would call an “underground” song to the mix. This song has not received the public recognition it deserves. I’m talking about the song: “Symphony” by Switch.
If you have yet to hear of Switch, they are Life. Church’s youth ministry for 6th – 12th graders. Switch focuses on “worship, friends, small groups, and a message geared towards students and their everyday life.” Their goal is “to create an experience where students can meet Christ and grow in their relationship with Him.” I’m going to be transparent here and admit that I did NOT know this band was a Youth Worship group. I did not know that at all. Honestly, that adds new respect to the group and the song for me because the song covers a profound subject.
In an interview with NewReleaseToday, Cassidy, a member of Switch, states that one of the themes they’ve landed on when writing this song “was how everyone has gone through some type of chaos in their lives, whether it is unemployment, family issues, marriage distress, difficulty raising kids, everybody has some type of chaos in their lives. We wanted to write a song that could be a prayer for people to sing in the middle of those circumstances.”
One of my favorite verses is the start of the chorus: “‘Cause even in the madness there is peace. Drowning out the voices all around me. Through all of this chaos, you are writing a symphony.” That part of the chorus resonates with that profound truth. God doesn’t cause chaos in your life, but God will ring the good out of the chaos. Doing all this can let Him create the perfect symphony called “LIFE.” Deep, am I right? I also find peace in God being able to drown out all the other voices in my head. There’s been plenty of times when other voices from others have taken a more permanent residency in my head than God’s voice ever has. I turned to be a people pleaser instead of a God pleaser. I use my age as the main reason for still trying to learn about listening to God and hearing Him above everyone else, but it’s a weak excuse. This song is an excellent reminder that God is with you through chaos and peace. He’s conducting the symphony of your life to provide the soundtrack for you to focus on.
That’s it regarding the lyrical breakdown, but the entire song is good. I could go on and on about it, but I’m going to wrap it up here. Go check out this song and let me know what you think.
See you next week to break down how March treated me.
