A little background on this band. This is a side project on John Cooper, lead singer of the band Skillet. He has described it as a “more metal” project of what he wants to do. It’s definitely a more metal version of Skillet, and it’s incredible. The band has an EP of five songs, with the title track “Demons”! Let’s dive into “I Cannot”
An article from crypticrock.com mentions this song as “a universally relatable, anthemic offering that is full of infectious, sing-along frustration – frustration and burning anger.” This is definitely a great representation of what this song is about. It starts off quiet, and then it GOES OFF! Its melody is definitely a head-banger. Let’s look at the chorus to really break through the meaning of this song.
The chorus is such a powerful message with such few words being spoken. Talking about being unable to live, breathe, endure suffering, hate, love, feel, deal, and change. This spoke to me a lot. There are periods in my life that I’ve gone through that have left me feeling numb. Not being able to create the change you know needs to occur because you feel numb and paralyzed to the current situation. It’s easy to find yourself in situations like that when anxiety is at such a high point. The acknowledgment of this, though, is a crucial point. Realizing that you have difficulty dealing with change because you feel this variety of emotions is good. You can break down why each emotion is so prominent and learn to resolve the emotion.
There are more powerful parts to this song that I have a harder time breaking down, but it’s so fluid with the song that you have to listen to it. This is a unique song compared to what we would consider Christian. Still, John Cooper wanted to use this project to make more “real” or connect content to everyone. Listen to this song, picture your frustration, sympathize, and pray. You will get through this. You will get stronger. You will get more challenging. And I pray that you grow in your relationship with God to trust Him and have faith in what He can do for you. Especially in a time like this, faith is crucial to hold onto to help us get through this.
Stay blessed, everyone! See you next week for April’s Breakdown!
