Welcome back to “Worship with Me,” my music series, which introduces you to some of my favorite worship music. I like to share information from the artist about the meaning of the song and some of my favorite lyrics.
Since we’re in the Christmas season, this and the next four Sundays will be about some of my favorite Christmas music. I hope you’re enjoying it and are ready for the season. I recognize and acknowledge that the holiday season isn’t always easy for everyone due to grief, lost relationships, and the general chaos of life. I hope these songs will bring at least a few minutes of your day.
Today’s song is “The First Noel” by VoicePlay. This song talks about the joy of the birth of Christ. “Noel” comes from the Latin word natalis, which means “birthdays” or “of or relating to birth.” It refers to the first Christmas and the excitement surrounding it. The song describes how Jesus was born as the King of Israel but was the King of all humanity. In the song, we hear about the angel’s announcement of Jesus’ birth to the shepherds, the shepherds announcing the news to the people of Bethlehem, the Magi traveling using the star of Christ, and the connection between his birth and the plan of salvation through Christ’s suffering.
The second verse is always very special to me:
They looked up and saw a star
Shining in the East beyond them far
And to the earth it gave great light.
And so it continued both day and night.
Jesus was always a source of light for me. When things felt dark, Jesus showed me a source of motivation, encouragement, hope, and peace to help me continue the fight until God’s victory was achieved. For the Magi to see this star, they also felt the same peace. They found hope and excitement in seeing the prophecy of the future Messiah coming true. This joy, peace, and excitement has been celebrated for over 2,000 years and will be celebrated for eternity. This season will let you see the hope, joy, and peace for the season of life you are walking in.
Next week, we’ll discuss “O Holy Night” by VoicePlay. Until then, stay blessed!
