Welcome back to “Worship with Me,” my music series, which introduces you to some of my favorite worship music. I like to share information from the artist about the meaning of the song and some of my favorite lyrics.
Since we’re in the Christmas season, this and the next four Sundays will be about some of my favorite Christmas music. I hope you’re enjoying it and are ready for the season. I recognize and acknowledge that the holiday season isn’t always easy for everyone due to grief, lost relationships, and the general chaos of life. I hope these songs will bring at least a few minutes of your day.
Today’s song is “Give Me Jesus” by Danny Gokey. The earliest known version of this song came out in 1845 by Rev. Jacob Knapp, a Baptist minister from New York. The phrase “Give me Jesus” comes from an old song about prioritizing Jesus in life. It can be in comfort, yearning, priority, and confession.
One of those areas hits close to me in Verse 2:
When I am alone
Oh when I am alone
And when I am alone
Give me Jesus
I am constantly reminded that I am never alone. Responding to that belief is challenging, but it doesn’t leave my mind. Sometimes, it’s hard to remember that because we feel like we’ve only experienced our problem or that we can feel burdened to share our problem with others or Christ. It’s in those alone moments that our world is the loudest. It’s those moments when we go to God unfiltered and share everything. Share our world. Share the highs. Share the lows. Share everything in between to create a bond with Christ and show that we trust him as a source in our lives. It might feel weird because we can’t see the person we’re talking to tangibly, but we can see how God works in our lives and through the people in our community who cross our paths. The main thing about Jesus is trust and faith. Trust that Jesus will be there for us, and have faith that his promises will be fulfilled in whatever way possible.
Next week, we wrap our Christmas Worship series by discussing “Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays” by David Archuleta. Until then, stay blessed.
