Today’s song is “Rearview” by TobyMac and Juan Winans. This song was released in 2025 as part of his latest album, “Heaven on My Mind.”
TobyMac share in a Facebook post that this song is about “letting go of a past that can leave you frozen from moving forward.” He mentioned that the heaviness we carry can last for eternity, but with God’s grace and compassion, that heaviness is made light. There’s a lot that can keep us stagnant in life. Areas where we’ve been hurt in before keeping where we are at risk of being hurt again. People we’ve avoided because of the hurt they have caused us or that we have caused them, avoiding any reconciliation that would be needed. We can rest with this fear of progress and discomfort knowing that we are followers of a loving, compassionate, and merciful savior that walks with us in that discomfort and allows us to experience those feelings without judgment, but also provides us strength, wisdom, and courage to overcome that discomfort in an effort to live a life through his calling and plan for us.
Let’s talk about this verse:
That trauma left us scramblin’ for cover.
I’m bein’ haunted by the question.
Did the apple fall far enough?
How often do our lives become haunted by our upbringing? By our family? By our community? It happens more than we realize, and often hear people talk about that they “don’t want to turn out like I did” or “don’t want to raise my child like I was raised.” We get stuck in the anxiety and panic of trying to do what we want to avoid and then freeze trying to avoid everything. We need to bring those fears to life. We need to name those concerns that we run into and then work towards overcoming and adapting them. We can do that, and sometimes, that’s through the sheer strength and grace of God, and sometimes it’s combined with the help of therapy, counseling, medications, support groups, and things related to that. We need to lean on him to try and do the best that we are capable of doing. We need to focus less on our thoughts and our fears and know that God is walking with us on the path of our lives and know that he wins all battles we face. We realize that we are unique individuals, not our parents or caregivers, and know that God has placed us on a different plan than our parents and elders. Lean into that path, leaning into God, and be willing and open to learn and unlearn what works and doesn’t.
