God’s Not Done with You || Tauren Wells || Track 2

I’m back to break down another one of my favorite Contemporary Christian songs. This month, we will look at “God’s Not Done with You” by Tauren Wells.

This song was, I believe, my introduction to Tauren Wells’s music. I’m glad for it, too, because Tauren has become one of my Top 5 favorite Contemporary Christian artists. He’s probably second behind Danny Gokey (I don’t see him being replaced anytime soon).

In an interview with NewReleaseToday, Tauren says that this song is for someone “who feels disqualified by their past guilt and shame to say that God has the ability, He’s actually a master architect, and He specializes in building on what remains in your life. If all you have is ruins, then ruins will be what He uses to recreate the great design that He has for your life.”

It’s interesting to hear him talk about it that way. I have often heard it from the perspective that no matter what point you are in your life, God is not done with his plans for you at all. You are to continue on his plan, expand your horizons, and stay faithful to the journey God put you on. To hear Tauren say this song is about not worrying about what you’ve done in your past, for God isn’t done molding you into His image and isn’t done using you for what He needs. To me, it makes the song more uplifting than it already was.

The opening lines of this song state his meaning VERY well: “Standing your ruins, feels a lot like the end. So used to losing, you’re afraid to try again. Right now all you see are ashes where there was a flame.” I’ve felt this. This almost describes burnout to me, which is something I’ve dealt with many times before. You continue to try and try, and all that seems to come out of these attempts is failure after failure. After so long, you get tired and feel like giving up and moving on to something else or moving on to nothing at all. It’s a friendly reminder to hear when you are dealing with consistent failures that God’s still working on you. He will raise you out of these ashes, these failures, and use them to hold you into a better being.

Part of the bridge of this song is interesting to me as well: “He’s got a plan, this is part of it. He’s going to finish what He started.” It’s always odd to hear that God’s plan includes my failures. It almost seems that God sets me up to fail, so I can re-recognize his greatness and regain my faith in Him. That may be true. Sometimes we try to do things independently when we know we can’t just because we’re too proud to ask for help. I’ve been there. Each time I’ve failed, God shows me that I can go to him in frustration, tears, sadness, and joy and that he’ll care and love me no matter the outcome. It’s also a reminder to be a better listener. To listen to God and hear if what I’m about to do will please Him and see what happens when He leads the journey.

This song got really deep for some reason. XD I hope you’ve enjoyed this breakdown of “God’s Not Done with You” by Tauren Wells. If there are other songs that you want me to break down, please leave a comment and let me know. Check out my Instagram and Facebook to keep up to date with my thoughts and ramblings (I know they’ve been quiet, but I’m hoping to be more active soon.) See you next week for my breakdown of how February 2020 went.
